MLB.tv Quality?

I'm looking to make a purchase on either an ATV2 or a Roku player in the near future. I was all set to go with Roku until the update that allows MLB and NBA to be watched. I would much prefer to purchase from Apple, and now it looks like I'll be going that direction.

But, I was curious if anyone had tried out the quality on either the MLB or NBA apps? Good quality through wifi, any freezing, other issues, etc?

it works great and has a great picture when who ever is broadcasting the game is doing so in high def. they YES network is incredible.

i had the roku last season. it was a disaster, would freeze and rebuff all the time, and sometimes just not work. so far this spring training i have no issues with the apple tv over wifi

But your saying all things considered, you can get a mlb/nba tab under internet with 4.3....Any buffering, off sync's?

With these tabs can you get any live streaming mlb/nba game?

Yeah, I had heard some bad things about the Roku. My main reason for getting one of these devices is MLB/NBA/Netflix. The only reason I wasn't looking at an ATV2 before was due to no sports being offered.

And, thanks everyone for the opinions. Feel free to throw out any other positive/negatives about the ATV2 and the MLB/NBA feeds. I'm probably not buying for another couple of weeks, so I'd love to hear anything you guys have to say.

No. You have to subscribe to their online services.

It's $100 or $120 for the year for MLB (depending on which features you want.) And, it's $65 for the whole NBA season (and with that $65 you can pick 7 teams to watch.)

Do you have the Apple TV hard wired to the internet or do you use it with wifi?

Do you have any idea what your average internet speed is?

no im just connect via wifi. i never have issues streaming anything. movies or tv shows from apple. home sharing or airplay.

i would say if you can stream movies from itunes with out any hiccups you should be able to stream mlb as well with out any issues connect to your wifi. so i would try it out at home before you spring for the mlb subscription. right now you can get spring training games for free before opening day of the season. if it doesn't work send it back.

i have no idea what my speed is.
 
watch out for the blackout rules on MLB though!

The blackout small print renders the service useless for following your home team, if you live in the what MLB regards as the region. I think it is a 5000 mile radius (sarcasm)

For example, I live in minneapolis. Twins fan. Fox Sports North (FSN) owns the broadcast rights. Whenever they play at home I cannot get them on mlb.tv. Whenever they play away I cannot get them on mlb.tv. Basically the only way you can see your home team on mlb.tv is if you travel to a geographic area outside of your home teams determined geography.

The fineprint says MLB.tv determines blackout by IP address.

I emailed MLB to see if I was mis-interpreting their fine print. They said, no, I was correct. To which I wondered back to them, uh, doesn't it make the service useless?

Oh, btw, I do not have cable or satellite, hence no FSN coverage.

I am open to correction, because I'd really like to be wrong and be able to stream the Twins games live over the internet, if someone knows how. MLB is pretty locked down on streaming.

people have been asking about this as have i. there seems to be no way around the black outs you speak of. doesn't matter if you are not a cable subscriber or not. the only way you will gt your home team broadcast is to subscribe to your local network provider. it sucks for a lot of people.

i dont live in new york anymore so it is perfect for someone like me who has moved away and still wants to follow their home team. or if your a crazy fan and really like to watch a lot of games. the only problem i will have is when it is a nationwide broadcast on Fox or ESPN, which will just give me an excuse to go to my local watering hole for a few suds = )

People looking to follow local teams may want to look into private VPNs/proxy servers. These will give you IP addresses of someplace fairly far from you, getting around the IP restrictions.

They're not free, but not totally expensive either.
 
In the NBA you can't watch the games live if you are in the blackout zone. However you can watch them 90 minutes after they finish. I have no idea on MLB.Tv though.
 
It's the same thing with MLB.tv. The blacked out games can be watched. They just can't be watched live like the rest of them. My favorite team is not the local team here so the blackout rules don't affect me. :D
 
So do you pay for MLB TV through iTunes or directly from MLB? I ask because I have some iTunes gift cards I could apply to it.

I picked up an Apple TV this weekend because of the MLB.tv deal. Everything worked great for me. Just plugged in the HDMI cable and power and away we go. I like how you can jump to innings, game events, runs scorred, etc. My 10 year old son loves baseball and he was pumped about it.
 
Not an NBA fan anymore. I was back in the day. But I can't stand watching pro basketball anymore. Love ncaa though

My Internet provider does this now :eek: I always thought of it as an issue till now.

how do i make this happen? lol

i have a comcast and a comcast modem with an airport extreme wireless router. imac, apple tv and all other ios devices connect to the airport extreme wirelessly.
 
Is the video HD for baseball? I want to get the year subscription, but if it isn't HD or it is choppy, I am not interested. I was thinking of waiting until the regular season when they are in the big parks with all the regular HD cameras. Is there a free trial during the regular season to see if you are OK with the quality?
