Was that necessary?

Perhaps some people here at MacRumors didn't know that MMS uses the data connection. So all these people will unofficial AT&T plans, might think they'll be getting MMS, but maybe they won't be getting it after-all.

If you only knew the half of it. This iPhone has gone through a LOT. I'm surprised it still works! If it ever stops working, I have an original iPhone here in mint condition. Hehe.

Moto Razr's have MMS, just stick with the phone you said you would stick with and quit blogging on this forum.

i dont know about that....On my 3rd line, i have data blocked completely, and MMS works just fine.....

Is it blocked on AT&T's end? My iPhone is data blocked using a fake APN profile in the software. If it's a WIX block, I think MMS would still work.

I already told you. Different servers. The server fro internet data is blocked, the server for MMS service is not.

If you want MMS, get rid of your fake APN and ask for data block for internet usage... Simple.

That's exactly what I'm thinking about doing. I tried calling AT&T but since I'm on a go-phone... it directed me to that stupid automated system. I didn't hear an option to speak to a rep, so I guess I'll have to go to the store in person. Would that be a wise thing to do or should I call some other number?

As predicted. Here come the MMS complaint threads. A day early too!

Usually if you have service, you have the edge network, if you dont have service, obviously there will be no way to send MMS anyways.

Seriously, why do people just assume things that aren't true?

This isn't a MMS complaint thread, this is a thread with a valid question about how MMS works, completely different.

why would anyone go through the hassle of an iPhone with out data...all of the cool things it does are negated when you have to look for WiFi everywhere...

I got tired of reading...

First, Spaz good to see you again man.

As I have stated before I am a former competent AT&T employee, so here it is...

MMS needs a data CONNECTION to work. It does not, however need a data PACKAGE. You do not get billed per KB, you get billed as a Message (from your messaging package)

A WIX Block will indeed prevent you from sending MMS, we used to put that on accounts by parents request to prevent their kids from sending/receiving MMS and using their phones browser

Question:
Do I need other services with Multimedia Messaging?
Answer:
Yes, you must also subscribe to MEdia Net and Text Messaging.

Question:
How am I charged for Picture & Video Messaging?
Answer:
You are charged for each message you send and receive unless you are on an unlimited messaging plan. When a single message is sent to multiple recipients, the sender is charged one message for each recipient and each recipient is charged for the message received.

Question:
Why do I need to subscribe to MEdia Net and Text Messaging?
Answer:
Consider MEdia Net as the highway down which the Multimedia Messaging travels. MEdia Net bills separately from Multimedia Messaging. You can either subscribe to a Messaging Plan, a Data Plan or pay per use. If you choose to use text or multimedia messages on a pay-per-use basis and don't ever use the MEdia Net outside of Multimedia Messaging, you will never be charged.

Hope this helps!

Okay... so I've got a go-phone sim card in my iPhone 3G and I've obviously turned off data to save money. When I try to send an MMS, it fails with the message "You are not subscribed to a cellular data network."

Was this a coincidence or does MMS truly go through 3G and EDGE rather than the same path as SMS?

From the last time i read up on the subject, seeing as texts are so small they are actually sent along the same signal the phone uses to see how much signal it has (thats the best way I can describe it). MMS is much more data, why would you think it works just like a text? The data takes hundreds if not thousands times more space.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C144 Safari/528.16)

I was going respond earlier but yes it uses data. Every phone that sends mms uses data. If you've ever had to input the info manually, you would know this. It's either an IP address or a URL

Well, there you have it folks. I've put a WIX block on my iPhone account and I can obviously not send or receive MMS messages. A thank you goes out to the people who were nice to me in this thread.

If anything… hopefully other people have learned something in this thread.

By the way… I'm not upset that I can't send MMS messages… totally not a big deal for me… I'd rather have data blocked than to receive miscellaneous charges for data access.

SMS uses a small data channel on the GSM protocol. This data channel is used to transmit infromation about the network (like the name, signal, type, etc) and for example connect calls. It was also realised it could be used to send small messages, then SMS was born.

Now, MMS is entirely different. When you get an MMS what actually happens is that you get a special type of SMS that tells your phone that it needs to connect to a server to download a MMS message. Doing so means it opens a data connection thru GPRS, EDGE, 3G, HDSPA, or whatever data connection channel is available.

Typically MMS uses a different APN ("data server") from normal internet or WAP usage. By doing so carriers can differentiate "normal" data for wap or internet from "mms" data which is allowed for free just so that the recipient can download the message. (free because the sender has paid for the message - it is not free, however, when you're abroad using roaming and most phones block MMS downloading when on roaming)
