I made a big mistake here without trying the free 60 days of mobile me account. instead i instantly purchase the one year membership. Hence when i start using it to sync my gmail account, and it's not working! Am i setting it wrongly or are any patch, application, etc. to get around it?

MobileMe does not SYNC with any other email account. You can have MobileMe Fetch email from another POP3 Account or you can have your other account "forwarded" to MobileMe (I recommend later).

Why don't you just use Gmail's IMAP connection?

If you set up Gmail using IMAP rather than POP3, then all devices will show exactly the same things.

MobileMe - iPhone - Gmail

Hey - thank you for the IMap tip.. I never knew exactly what it was for and now I have all my computers in Synch. I'll be using MobileMe to synch my calendars and contacts with my PC, Iphone, and IMac. If you have a solution for that, maybe I won't need mobileme after all.
Thanks in advance.

I also forward my gmail to MobileMe and it works perfectly :)

Is there a way to reply to a forwarded gmail message from mobile me, but have the reply retain the gmail email address??? I'd prefer to keep my mobile me account private, but not have to switch to gmail for replies in order to keep it that way..

Well, not a perfect solution, but a solution nonetheless. There are two options. One- everytime you reply to a mail, click on the "from" field. An option box will pop up, letting you choose the gmail account. You just have to make sure to do it every time. or Two- change the imap settings on your iphone in the mobileme account to the imap gmail settings. Every email that goes out will go out seemingly from your gmail address. That's what I do :D

ETA- SMTP gmail settings in the mobileme section. Not imap. Sorry about that!

Is it possible to do a similar setup for when you send mail from mobile me online?

I forward my gmail to mobileme and active push on the iPhone so my gmail is actually being pushed via mobileme. So I setup my mobileme account as my mail account on the iPhone.

If you want your gmail address to be used when sending out emails instead of mobileme account go to:

1. Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select your mobileme Account
2. Account Info > SMTP (Outgoing Mail Server) > Turn Off smtp.me.com
3. Add Server... (Other SMTP Servers) >
- Host Name = smtp.gmail.com
- Username = __xxx__@gmail.com
- Password = your password
4. Turn On the smtp.gmail.com server

If you think your a MobileMe guru, then answer this for a challenge!

I claim here that MobileMe is useless and only good for people with minimum email requirment not every minute users and I tell you why:

Let me example my own case scenario here,

I am with GMail, and use my email frequently due to business demand and I receive emails from multiple contacts and companies.

I set Gmail in my Iphone but as you know, not only 15min auto sync chews my battery, also my iphone is constantly connected to data. So after speaking to Apple, I tried Mobileme as it has reliable push.

In Gmail, I have 18 folders with specific tags for specific emails going to these folders automatically so I would know where to find my Marketing, finance, operation, logistic and etc emails. Just like how you set folders in MS Exchange or any other email application or webmail application.

So my setup was to forward messages from Gmail to Mobileme account so I can have it pushed to my iphone. But now I was receiving all mixed emails in my iphone inbox.

To make the story short, Mobileme doesnt have incoming filtering system if you only intend to use Mobileme with Iphone. I could add 18 folders to Mobileme's web account and all 18 folders appeared in my iphone but all mail was delivered to inbox since this feature is not available.

So back to my original comment, its good if you receive few emails a day but not many emails from dirrent companies. I get somany emails in my inbox that I miss the important ones and have to go through all emails to find the one im after. This filtering system is available on any free webmail service but Apple is too busy counting $$$ earned from Mobileme to fix this.

I agree that MobileMe webmail is very limited and does not have the ability to create folders and filters to manage messages on the MobileMe site. But you have to look at MobileMe as what the services is about. It's about Sync data FROM your local Mac (mail, calendar, photos and files) as the starting point, then to MobileMe (Cloud) to iPhone or other Macs. For this to work perfectly, (1) your Mac has to be on and running/connected to the internet at all times...this is very important for what YOU want. (2) your MobileMe account is active on the iPhone and Push turned on. If all you have is a MacBook/Pro and is with you all the time on the road then the mail thing is not going to work properly (I'll get to it in a minute). I would suggest to get a cheap Mac Mini or something that can run Mail and stay connected at all times.

Here's the setup.
1. You have GMail or whichever email service/server auto-forward to MobileMe because you want the Push function. I suppose you have outgoing emails (SMTP) configured to GMail's so your recipients don't get confused by the sender.

2. On your Mac, setup MobileMe mail account in Mail...from the menu File > Add Account... and add your MobileMe account info. Set Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) to Gmail (or the SMTP server of whichever account you have forwarded to MobileMe). To set this go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts > select your account > Under Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) > check "Use only this server" and select the drop down menu and chose Edit Server List. Add smtp.gmail.com under Server Name and click on Advanced. Use default ports and SSL, enter password authentication, your username and password.

3. Creating Folders and Rules

This is where you set up your folders like you've done in GMail. From your Mac, in Mail, create a New Mailbox (click + at bottom left of Mail and select New Mailbox). Select your MobileMe account as the Location and give the mailbox a name ie. Finance, Marketing, Operations, John Doe, etc. and repeat until you have all your proper folder you want your mail to automatically go into. These mailboxes will appear on the left pane in Mail under your MobileMe email address. This gets sync'd to your iPhone or any other Macs you have running Mail configured to your MobileMe account. The mailboxes will appear as how you've set them up. This is what MobileMe does well.

Next you set up your Rules. Go to Mail > Preferences > Rules. Click on Add Rule. Give description for your rule ie. Finance, Marketing, etc... create your conditions and move the messages to the related mailbox created above. Create new rules for each mailbox. That's all.

4. Set Mail to check for new mail Every minute (Mail > Preferences > General > Check for new mail). That's all for Mail.

5. Last, configure MobileMe, go to Systems Preferences > MobileMe > Sync > Synchronize with MobileMe Automatically and check Mail Accounts and Mail Rules, Signatures and Smart Mailboxes.

This is what I have set up and it works perfectly. All the mail stays on the Gmail server and the Mail app on the Mac, iPhone and MobileMe are sync'd the way I have them set up locally. The rules / filtering works perfect for me and pushes them properly on my iPhone. The same with my Calendar. All are sync'd instantaneously as advertised. For me the service has been great since Apple got it all working and I don't find the service useless as you say. Good luck with it!

Avoiding Apple mail and Mobile Me and having your iphone check for new mail via the 15 minute check option may be worth the inconvenience of battery drain ...

I've been through this as well, trying to get Apple Mail/Mobile Me to work in sync as you'd expect, it's just not possible, definitely not feature rich apps and they're missing things other providers offer completely free.

I went so far as going back to the BlackBerry for a while just because of the way it handles emails ... but I came to my senses and went back to the new iphone 3GS .... I also realized it's just easier to use gmail from the beginning, it's (free) features are that good and you also have the option of installing gmail mobile for easy access to all gmail app's and it's easier to check for new mail if you need it sooner than 15 minutes once in a while... online full featured email has a lot of perks, Apple may have to go there or just simply stop following around with a vanilla email program in a world that prefers much more variety/options...

I use both Me and GMail and forward the Me to GMail. Me is slow, search very slow and the server often are busy. So I find it much easier to search on GMail. The forwarding usually takes about 15 minutes. So I use both the programs for their strengths but I do have both windows open most of the time.

I have that part setup already and like it a lot, which makes me want it setup the same when I am online with mobileme. Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately no :( I hope they allow that soon. It IS possible however to do it if you're sending from the mail app that comes with OS X.

Thank you! Guess it's a good think I almost never log into mobileme to write an e-mail. I do have it setup in the OS X app, was just thinking the mobileme version would finish it all off and have everything the same.

Thanks for all your thought guys!

Totally agree

imacdaddy, Thanks for detailed instructions. I own a macbook pro. Keeping my computer on all the time is not an option for me. I understand there are back door ways and long processes to most issues but not this one. Besides, Mobileme costs $99USD, this is well over priced for what it does specially if its only a syncing application as you say. People dont sync callendars and contacts on daily basis. But im glad its working for you. Cheers.

I have a few more questions if you do not mind?
What happens to the forwarded mail on Gmail? Do you mark it as read, archive it, or what? In other words, when you open up Gmail, where do you go for the forwarded emails?

Basically, in short, how do you manage your forwarded mail?

Sorry for the questions ans I am trying to figure out the best way.
Your and any other thoughts are greatly appreciated.

PBI: For the first week or so, I left the forwarded messages in my gmail inbox to make sure I was receiving every single email in my mobileme inbox. After I made sure I was, now I set gmail to delete incoming messages after forwarding them to mobileme :)
