Well team, I was hoping this was going to be the year for Mobile me to be free. I was reading the latest from MacLife.com (5 Tricks for Customizing and Improving Gmail. Posted 03/16/2011 at 5:07pm | by Gina Trapani) http://www.maclife.com/article/features/5_tricks_customizing_and_improving_gmail
and I was thinking about all of these tricks can easily be adopted by apple. Has anyone else started to use the free google applications within Gmail?
I've started to like gmail labs.

Really want to know too, any ideas?

$99 a year for MobileMe is too much, I think.

I use MobileMe but agree that the current price is a bit absurd

I do think the service has value but nowhere near that high for what else is out there for free

Some parts may be free. For instance, sync calendar & contacts is free for everyone. iDisk is like that:

1. Free unlimited storage for itunes purchases.
2. Free 5 GB storage with limited file formats (incl. mail and photo gallery)

And paid versions (no limit in file formats):

1. 20 GB -- $10/year (google gives 20 GB for 5 dollars, so this number is reasonable)
2. 50 GB -- $25/year
3. 100 GB -- $50/year
4. 250 GB -- $100/year

It would be awesome if mobile me was like that and there would be no reason to prevent me buying 50 GBs o storage :)

MobileMe Freedom

I've heard rumors about Apple making the full version of MobileMe free to Mac customers... but that probably won't happen for at least a year.

I've heard as soon as April or they are going to introduce a revamped MobileMe with music storage from $20 a year. I currently use Google Sync and it is good but I would prefer to go back to MobileMe but not at it's current price.

I doubt it'll be free, but the cost will be very much minimized.

I'm wondering guys, i have a 60 day MobileMe trial, and i want to check it out, should i use that now or wait?

just tried to cancel my mobile me trial - got this message:

Are you sure you want to cancel your subscription?
If you plan on switching to MobileMe's free service for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch make sure you own a qualifying device before you cancel.
When you cancel, you will lose access to your MobileMe mail, contacts, calendar, iDisk, gallery, and all other MobileMe services. All your data will be deleted from MobileMe. To save this information, back up your MobileMe data before you cancel.

any1 else got this

it appears mobile-me will be free for iphone/ipad/ipod only

That's just referring to the fact mobile me's 'Find my iPad' feature is free.

I think Apple should make mobile me for free or at least a very low cost for apple products owner.

They could set for mobile me to work only with apple products and minimal usage option for windows user (probably through web interface only).
In this case, they have more chance to get more loyal customer or customer who won't bother to look for other brand devices as their data are currently works only with apple.

I'm going to activate mobileme once it is free or less than $30 per year.

I would agree that Mobileme is too expensive for what it is. Hotmail gives you 25GB of storage with skydrive, free find my phone features, Microsoft Office WebApps, and of course e-mail.

The most I'd pay for Mobileme is what, $30? Even then, it's a premium. But the @me.com address is cool, I guess.

It really comes down to what you use with MM. First of all, Hotmail has to be the worse of the public free email domains with the amount of spam it gets, second MS Office Web, really?

If that is all you want, then sure, it is fine, but if you wanted integrated into your OS, 20 gb's of storage, which DOES NOT include the pictures you put in the gallery and the ability to access external drives or files on your time capsule/time machine via back to my mac, not to mention the contacts and cal sync you aren't going to get all of that in one place with one simple point of contact anywhere.

Again, it depends on what you need. If you only want online back up there are tons of places that do it cheaper. But if you want all the synch services, integrated OS services, online storage, photo gallery and the ability to access other computers and hard drives on your network remotely you aren't going to find all of that for any price from one provider.

MM centralizes everything me. I don't need to bother with multiple accounts, multiple services, multiple apps. I have push email, push calendar, push contacts, push notes, and iDisk all in ONE place with ONE account and password. The Find My iPhone/iPad/iPod feature just adds to the value. It may retail for $99 a year but you can find it for half the price on Amazon (Amazon is the seller and shipper so it's legit).

If I went with Gmail, Dropbox and the myriad of other services, it's just a hassle. Time wasted = decreased productivity. I'd rather pay $50 a year than mess with inferior services.

If Apple makes MM free then so be it. I was able to boost my productivity and save lots of time every single day. And for me, I got my money's worth.

Does Anyone Really Know if MobileMe will be free?

Ok, the truth is that nobody really knows if Mobile me will ever be free or even if it will be less than $30.00.

I liked the advice of the person who said to just buy MobileMe off of Amazon for $50.00.

Nobody Knows!!!

I'll give the same advice. I'd pay $99/year for OTA contact syncing with all my devices, the rest is just bonus. But why pay $99 when you can get it on eBay for $45?

You mean you bought some storage of HIS account? Because that's what you did.

well technically i'm just added to a family account. thanks for pointing that out though, as unnecessary as it was.
it renewed for a small price, whilst i'm waiting/hoping for updates.

Ill be annoyed if they make it free! As I have been paying for mine!

And haven't you been enjoying the use of it while others who did not pay could not? I mean really, so they make it free? That is like saying you would be annoyed if the next time you got gas the price was cheaper than the first time, you still got to use the gas you paid for.
