mobileme ends in 1 week?

I'm getting a tad sick and tired of all the constant reminders. I really don't want to move to iCloud, but its being forced upon us.

So what if I don't move to iCloud. Can I still access my email with 's Mail application? And only web browsing will not be accessible?

And something about needing to upgrade to Lion, WTF? so we're forced to pay $$ to upgrade sys software just b/c  is forcing us to move to iCloud?

Is there an way out of this, or an opt out?
 
You can get Snow Leopard for free so you can use iCloud without any cost.

Also, this means you no longer need to pay for MobileMe...so it's actually Apple giving you services for free that they used to charge for.

EDIT: Sorry, I stand corrected. I forgot that Snow Leopard isn't supported either. So yes, you need to upgrade to Lion if you want to use iCloud. Or you can switch to a non-Apple service if you really want.
 
So upgrading to the free Snow Leopard is pointless? ie. I still need to pay $$ to upgrade to Lion to use iCloud?

I really only care about my emails. Can I still access my mac.com and me.com email accounts using Mail? And if I move to iCloud, can't I just access it using web browsers like Safari? why the need for Lion OS? is it b.c of syncing all the other services? But I'm only concerned about my emails..
 
If you're running Leopard, it saves you the cost of paying for Snow Leopard just to upgrade to Lion. So they're throwing in a $30 upgrade for free, basically.

If you don't care about syncing at all, you can use iCloud via browsers (and natively on an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch etc., if you have any of those running iOS 5 or later; or on any Windows computer running Vista SP2 or Windows 7 with at least Outlook 2007).

I believe I read somewhere that you could keep using just the mail in Snow Leopard, as it's just a standard IMAP and SMTP server, so it's not like there's anything special to it. It wouldn't work with your contacts or creating events in your calendar from e-mails, though.

EDIT: Also, to clarify, you'll keep your mac.com/me.com e-mail addresses and existing e-mail when you upgrade to iCloud, in case that was a concern.
 
I'm running 10.6.8, which is Snow Leopard I think. And running Safari 5.1.5. And Mail 4.5

I don't sync calendars or contacts and all that crap. Nor did I ever use the photo gallery or website features or the storage features.

All I use is the email, aliases and that's it. That's all I care about, the continuation of the email comms.

With the system above, Mail and safari versions I'm running do I have to do anything? to keep things continuing?

In fact do I even need to "move to iCloud" at all?
 
Yes, 10.6.8 is Snow Leopard.

I think you still have to move to iCloud, as at some point the MobileMe servers will be turned off.

If you only ever send e-mail from your local computer and don't have any other devices you care about having your contacts on or having your contacts available on the iCloud site for sending e-mail, I think you'll be set to just keep using your mail in Mail.app. Depending on your setup, it's also an option to sync your contacts with Google or Yahoo or other services, but it sounds like you're perfectly happy having them just on your computer.
 
Just move to iCloud. If its just email your worried about you can access it from the mail app or web console!
 
Thanks guys. That's what I'm unsure about., if I have to move to iCloud or not

I use Mail on my MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro -- sounds like these are safe.

I sometimes use Safari to view emails in MobileMe, and use my iPhone to check emails

So, if I want to view and access my emails from July 1 onwards on Safari, do I still need to migrate to iCloud?

And b/c I don't give a rats *ss about this syncing BS, I don't have to upgrade to Lion right?

Sounds like I might *****'in have to.. :mad:
 
Yes, you need to move to iCloud no matter what. But it's not like it's a big deal to move...you just follow a couple quick steps and sign into the new servers. The question is really whether you need to upgrade to Lion, which I think you can do without, at least for now.

I'm not really sure what your reluctance to move to iCloud is, other than the potential cost of Lion.
 
I like to leave things untouched. Must be getting old..

Why doesn't  automatically migrate our accounts over? does it have to do with permission, and hence they want us to hit the move button and click their user agreement crap?

I cannot stand the Lion interface. It sucks. I prefer 10.6.8. Call my old fashioned :D Oh yeah and I'm a tight a*se.  makes enough coin already without having to milk us for Lion and other upgrades.. they should be free. I'm serious :D
 
Well, Microsoft charges $199 for 1 upgrade copy of Windows 7 Pro. So for 3 machines, you'd pay $600 to upgrade. Apple charges $30 for upgrades on up to 5 computers. Seems reasonable to me. Regardless of how much money Apple makes from other products, it's reasonable to me that they should charge to cover their costs of development for software. And don't take this as a pro-Apple-doing-anything, anti-Microsoft-everything statement - I develop in C# .NET on Windows full-time. In fact, I just had to purchase another $900 of software licenses from Microsoft for my business this week, so I appreciate not having to pay nearly as much to license Apple software.

Lion isn't really that much different than Snow Leopard in terms of UI. I actually can't even remember anymore what changed.

Apple didn't automatically move the accounts so people could deal with their data as they saw fit. A lot of people were using iDisk and website/photo hosting etc. It gave people a chance to decide what to do with that data. Also, since iOS 5 and Lion are required, it gave people an opportunity to decide an appropriate time to migrate. And they gave months and months to do it, with tons of notice along the way. Honestly, I think they've been very accommodating in this process. And if you don't want to meet the tech requirements (and would like to keep using a 3 year old OS for the rest of your life), you're certainly free to not use their service anymore. And notice, by the way, that iCloud is free :p
 
In short you need to go through the account migration on Apple's website. However, you can stick to Leopard or Snow Leopard and still use Apple Mail with imap to access your mail. Apple has a support knowledge base article on the settings needed. Also, if you search this forum, there are plenty of posts with the information needed.

A couple more things.
You may have to change your password for iCloud. It requires at least one capital letter and one number. I didn't have these in my MobileMe password, so I had to change mine. If you already have at least one of each in your p/w, no problems.
If you use the Mail app in your dock, you may have to check your server settings. I had to and it's easy. Follow the steps in this thread:

Best of luck and let us know how it goes. I want to stick with Snow Leopard as long as I can. It works for me.

whats with the Mail settings, what needs changing?
 
In Mail>Preferences>Accounts.
Make sure the settings are imap.mail.me.com and smtp.mail.me.com for the Incoming and Outgoing servers respectively. I created a new account in Mail and called it iCloud to keep it separate from MobileMe.
Easier than it sounds. Really. It lets Mail keep track of new incoming emails.

Yeah currently my Mail settings are..

Incoming: mail.me.com
Outgoing: smtp.me.com

So yeah, there's a change..

But shouldn't there mail settings have iCloud in there somewhere?

And why are your settings still imap.mail.me.com and smtp.mail.me.com? ie, still have me.com, thought mobileme/me.com was getting wiped out as of 1st July and replaced with iCloud??
 
me.com is still the e-mail domain for iCloud, i.e. people who sign up for new e-mail accounts get an @me.com e-mail. The iCloud IMAP and SMTP servers have new addresses (posted above).
 
ok, i have 'migrated' to iCloud. but have not been asked to change my Mail settings?

Should I do it anyway, or?

and now, i have to log into icloud.com, instead of me.com?? WTH? :confused::mad::rolleyes:

Stop right now and quit Mail, it must be closed. Then open System Preferences->iCloud and setup iCloud through that pane. Then go back into System Preferences->Mail, Contacts & Calendars and make sure you sync what you want to iCloud.

Yep, you log into icloud.com as me.com is going away at the end of the month.
I wasn't asked to change my Mail settings, and my Mail app wouldn't register new emails when they arrived. Bear (thanks Bear!), who posted above in this thread, gave me the settings needed. I changed them and voila! Mail app started getting emails and giving notifications for them.

my Mail is still working ok. do i need to this? I'm still on 10.6.8 (SL) remember.. so no iCloud in sys prefs, still MobileMe

cool, ok. yeah i now log in through iCloud but it is crap. slow and now no access to emails!! "Cannot load mail" -- how f'en lame! WTH? -- but Mail is still ok - thank god

my Mail seems to be still working ok and i haven't touched a thing. so maybe leave it alone? why hasn't  asked me to change my settings in the move over? (remember i'm on 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Not Lion)

I'm on SL as well and I never got the Cannot load Mail screen, even before I changed the settings in Mail app.
I don't notice iClous being slower than MobileMe either.
Maybe you should report it to Apple.
I think Apple will be releasing 10.6.9 soon, if for no other reason than to change the MM icons to iCloud.
Check in System Preferences>MobileMe that it says "Your MobileMe account has been upgraded to iCloud".

That "Cannot load mail" screen is from iCloud.com, not Mail. my Mail app is so fat 100% working ok
