I had a MobileMe account for 18 months during the transition from mac.com to Mobileme.

The only thing I really used was the Email/Contacts. I never used the calendar, VERY rarely used iDisk and only had one Mac so never used the Sync feature. When the end of the subscription came, I spent a fair amount of time looking into alternatives for the email. I wanted email that I could sync, etc, and chose Google Apps.

I set up my own domain with Google Apps so my email address is @mydomain and generally, I'm happy with the performance. However, I mostly use the web based email. I tried setting the email up in Outlook 2011 on my Mac but (partly because our Internet is naff), the emails took far too long to download to my Mac. I can't comment on whether MobileMe would be faster with our rubbish Internet though.

The main thing I like about Google emails is you get about 7GB storage in your email account. Remember MobileMe takes your email storage off your 20GB allowance.

However, I've just got a second hand Macbook Pro and will be getting a Mac Mini when they're updated so I'm now looking into Syncing options and File Storage. MobileMe seems like the sensible solution, being an all-in-one solution, but I've just found SugarSync that offers a free 5GB account and paid accounts such as 30GB for $4.99/m which is much better value than MobileMe. They also offer a referral scheme where you can get extra space by referring people.
