Is it worth buying mobileme for my ipad (wifi only) and macbook pro?

What do you guys use it for?

Im also wondering if its possible for mobileme to trace a lost ipad if its not connected to wifi?

I like it and use it for work file transfers. If you do buy it, don't pay retail. You can find it discounted for a lot less.
No, you can't locate a device that's "off the grid." Optimally, it should be on 3G. Wifi location only works if the device can access the Wifi, so just because there's Wifi nearby doesn't help if it's a secured network.

MobileMe is not worth it. I've tried it twice and both times let it lapse. You can try the free trial to see if its good for your situation.

If there were no Google, MobileMe might be worthwhile, but since you get almost all the same functionality for free from Google, why pay for something?

Don't think the FindMyiPhone feature will work with a non-3G iPad.

For the WiFi model, no you cannot tract it, since it does not have GPS or a cellular system what can give you a general idea with tower triangulation. You can still remote wipe and display a message on it.

For me, I think its worth it. The calendar and contact sync is spooky good.
 
I really like it. I've had it for over 3 1/2 years back when it was Mac.com. I do miss the greeting cards that Mac.com had. I have an iMac, MBP, iPhone and iPad. I love the syncing between all of my devices. When I make a change on my iPhone it's waiting for me at home to sync with my iMac and MBP. I don't use a lot of the features but to me it's worth every penny. Yes you can buy it cheaper elsewhere but I have it on auto renew. That way I don't have to worry about it. The twenty dollars a year isn't gong to kill me. As another poster said try it free first and see if it's right for you.

how about iDisk? google got alternative to this?

iDisk gives you 20GB of online storage at the price of $99 per year (in addtion you get all the other MobileMe services).

Google offers 1GB free online storage for GoogleDoc's, 8GB free for Gmail and 1 GB free Picasa picture storage. You can buy additional storage (up to a Terabyte) with 20GB costing $5 per year.

Dropbox.com provides desktop and mobile integration like iDisk. The 2GB of online storage is free. 50 GB can be had for $9.95 per month or 100GB for $19.99 per month.
 
MobileMe is amazing. I have an iPhone, iPad and Mac. It syncs all 3 automatically, and when I hit the sync button just to see how fast it was, within 1 minute or less everything was synced. It's very cheap and worth its weight in gold.

... and you get the scanning of email for personal information for FREE. Wow, what a deal.

Seriously, to help pay for Gmail, Google searches your mail for data collection and proper paring of ads to you.

I'd rather pay Apple for similar services (email, contacts, ect..) and forgo the data collection.

Just to confirm, dropbox rocks, much better than idisk imo. Find someone you love and uses it, ask them for a signup link- they offer 250mb free upgrades for referrals.
 
I think it's worth it, but that's just me. I kind of take it for granted now after I've had it for 3 years, back it was still .Mac. I couldn't really imagine what'd it be like without it. Get the trial first.
 
Family Pack

I have the family pack and think it's worth what it costs. Unfortunately it doesn't have the functionality of dropbox -- but that's free for 2 gigs.
 
Worth it for me. I like fact that it keeps all my devices (MBP, iPhone, and iPad) synchronized. Also, I keep all the files I frequently use on iDisk and having the ability to access them from any device is a very handy feature.
 
I thinking MobileMe is great. Sign up for the free trial (3 months). Chances are when iTunes.com etc goes live, MobileMe is likely to become free to Apple users anyway, so you may never need to pay.

Even if you do, I'm more tempted to rely on a pay-for service than 'free' offerings from Google (you pay in other ways...).

Agreed. Google may look at my info but why will they? I'm not S Jobs that I'm making millions and am extremely famous worldwide and have idiotic fans wanting to know about my personal information. Anyhow, it is your decision if you wish to trust google or not... I cannot decide that.
