You don't double tap all the time anyway to access the multitask bar?

I fail to see how this would add on any "wear" to the home button than the multitask bar already does..
After owning an iPhone 4 for 13 months, I can tell you that the Home button gets decidedly 'flaky'. This is purely down to the introduction of iOS4's double-tapping, as all the previous iPhones I've owned, never had this issue.
Adding more functionality to the double-tap, would only speed up the process toward Home button death.
The swipe down is way more intuitive anyway.

Thanks :) However widgets are optional. I've turned of the stock market widget. It's up to the user then.

Other reason to have as a widget is my home button doesn't always work due to over use! Out of warranty now too so can't get a replacement.

go into accessibility options and turn on assistive touch. you get a small orb that you can position on any edge of the screen that can act as a software version of any button or gesture.

I honestly would rather just have them change Spotlight Search and replace that area of the home screen with Dashboard ala OS X. That would be your widget area with Spotlight being a widget.

This way The multitasking will have its own uncluttered area, notification center will have its own uncluttered area and widgets will have their own uncluttered area.

[Edit]: Heck, replace the multitasking tray with an Expose/Mission Control hybrid with live app previews while they're at it.

I do like this idea. I've never once used that Spotlight search -- turn it into a setting or something.

This would kill battery life!
