Mojave Graphics Cards with Boot Screen?

Hi all:

Are there any supported graphics cards that are at least known to be flashable, and supported by Mojave's built in drivers?

I tried to read through all the threads on Mojave supported video cards but cant quite find my answer. I know Apple officially supports 2 Nvidia cards, the 580 is one of them. However, my understanding is that since there are no mac editions of those cards (nor likely will be) that none of them support the graphics at boot time (and as a consequence do not support file vault on the boot drive).

Maybe there are some other cards that can be flashed and are known to work? Thanks for any pointers!

So to meet your requirements for Nvidia, that would be GTX 680. For AMD, the 7950 or its R9 equivalent (R9 280 I think).

Knowing you though, you probably want to run like 11 monitors or something. I'm not sure about that part.

If you need boot screens with 4K monitors, the only solution I can think of that meets all your requirements would be GTX 630, 640, 680, or 780 with MacVidCards EFI v2 flash.

Radeon 7950/7970/RX 280 and a bunch of others can be flashed with the ROM of the official Radeon 7950 "Mac Edition" card.

It's important to note that you will not be able to use FileVault even with those cards, as Apple has decided to block it from being enabled under Mojave on all cMPs.

My question is. Why the booting is so important for u? You should be happy apple let you use windows graphic. As long as it get the job done that’s all that matter.

NVIDIA Web Drivers for Mojave not available yet. If you’re using or planning to use them, hold off for a bit.

Apple officially no longer supports FileVault on Mac Pro 5,1’s with Mojave. If it’s necessary, stick with High Sierra.

I’m sure flashed EFI cards still show boot screens in some capacity. I have not personally tried yet. Waiting for NVIDIA Web Drivers. Have official EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition that will eventually test and report. Have GTX 1080 FE non EFI that is primary card and a Sapphire Pulse RX580 on standby in case.

Booting is important because if you can see the boot screens you can log into a machine using file vault. So you basically cannot use file vault without boot screens.

Thank you for those lists. I wonder, has anyone tried flashing the Radeon wx 9100. It drives 6 screens which is useful to me.

But it would seem that even WITH EFI boot screens Apple is blocking usage of FileVault on the classic Mac Pros.

All GPUs act like non-EFI GPUs that many have been using for several years. Had Apple not forced Metal in this update, likely wouldn’t be as drastic of a move. The stock GPUs 5770/5870 sold with the stock configs of the officially supported 5,1 machines are not Metal compatible.

Even if FV can be “enabled” with a hack, that’s not something I’d even remotely mess with or trust.

Yea so choices are grim. Update without filevault, or stay with High Sierra until the Mac Pro replacement comes out (praying it's not some trashcan mac redux and doesnt cost a zillion dollars)...which will be coming out of Tim Cook's deep pipeline any minute now...

You can use the WX 9100 and WX 8200, but they cannot be flashed for boot screens. If you want a boot screen best option is the last 3 cards in Apple’s supported list (HD 7950, Quadro K5000, & GTX 680 Mac Editions) and those have native drivers.

Gtx680 was still refused as a non metal card by a 18a391 (final) mojave bootstick. Installing by starting the install macos mojave app within mojave beta worked. So there is a bad taste in the mouth...

There is something going on with Mojave. On my 2009, 4,1 to 5,1, I have a PNY GeForce 970 macvidcard EFI. The 18A389 beta would not install from the USB boot or from the desktop. I received the error message that the PNY card was not metal supported. Today I download the final release and installed it without any problems from the USB boot.

On my 2010, 5,1, I have an EVGA GeForce 680 macvidcard EFI. The 18A389 beta was installed from the USB boot without any problems. Now it gets interesting.

I went back to the 2009 4,1 to 5,1 to do a fresh install from Mojave 18a391. I received the error message that the
PNY GeForce 970 macvidcard EFI card was not metal supported which it is.

I then tried to install Mojave 18a391 on my 2010 5,1 with the EVGA GeForce 680 macvidcard EFI. I received the error message that my EVGA GeForce 680 macvidcard EFI was not metal supported which it is.

However, I installed Mojave 18a391 from the desktop on the 2009 and 2010 without any problems.

Yea, they made a mess of this. I guess some support is better than no support. But I wish they cared to make this less miserable. You just get the broader feeling that they dont care about the mac, and about mac loving pro/enthusiasts. They're pushing their longest and most loyal fanbase away. Or maybe that should be past tense.

I can get how people would be frustrated but I gotta say after dealing with Windows 10 for the past few months for a few things I'll take the bones that apple throws at us. Damn that os sucks and I really enjoy building machines. Forced updates on a pro machine is unacceptable to me. I keep telling myself that Linux will get there and it never does.

You left out the RX4 series which are running fine. Mostly the reference cards but still running fine.

If you need boot screens with 4K monitors, the only solution I can think of that meets all your requirements would be GTX 630, 640, 680, or 780 with MacVidCards EFI v2 flash. That enables DP 1.3 and 1.4 for these older cards.

nothing would enable dp 1.3 1.4 for older card which dont support it natively, like kepler cards.

This is a bug that was introduced with Developer Beta 7. You need to run the 18A391 installer from 10.13.6 through 10.14 Beta 6 (18A353d).
