So to meet your requirements for Nvidia, that would be GTX 680. For AMD, the 7950 or its R9 equivalent (R9 280 I think).

Knowing you though, you probably want to run like 11 monitors or something. I'm not sure about that part.

If you need boot screens with 4K monitors, the only solution I can think of that meets all your requirements would be GTX 630, 640, 680, or 780 with MacVidCards EFI v2 flash.

Thank you so much AM. Yea these days I’m down to just 6 screens! I’m going to try the 9100 without the boot screens. Now that I understand that FileVault won’t work regardless of the boot screen, it’s a bit moot. And that card has 6 Mini DisplayPort connectors, so it might fit the bill.

Could everyone please fill THIS google doc out when they have either successfully or un-successfully installed MOJAVE with their chosen GPU in the cMP 5,1's.

Thanks. ;)

I am currently using Redon 580 and still in the process of updating the Mojave. I’ll fill up the update if it work or it doesn’t so people could use if for their upgrade.

Given FileVault is disabled for cMP with Mojave, does anyone know but it is an option to format a non-boot disk with encryption?

Not that I've been able to find. I'd bet you can plug it in to another Mac via a USB enclosure, encrypt it and then connect it back to the cMP though. I haven't tested that myself, but I think chances are high it would work.

Pretty sure the option is available in the Disk Utility App, but I haven’t tested it.

It currently didn’t support boot screen on the Readon 580. I only use the hdmi port but not display port.

There is something going on with Mojave. On my 2009, 4,1 to 5,1, I have a PNY GeForce 970 macvidcard EFI. The 18A389 beta would not install from the USB boot or from the desktop. I received the error message that the PNY card was not metal supported. Today I download the final release and installed it without any problems from the USB boot.

On my 2010, 5,1, I have an EVGA GeForce 680 macvidcard EFI. The 18A389 beta was installed from the USB boot without any problems. Now it gets interesting.

I went back to the 2009 4,1 to 5,1 to do a fresh install from Mojave 18a391. I received the error message that the
PNY GeForce 970 macvidcard EFI card was not metal supported which it is.

I then tried to install Mojave 18a391 on my 2010 5,1 with the EVGA GeForce 680 macvidcard EFI. I received the error message that my EVGA GeForce 680 macvidcard EFI was not metal supported which it is.

However, I installed Mojave 18a391 from the desktop on the 2009 and 2010 without any problems.

There are no Nvidia cards that support Metal API

really?
Kepler+ supports Metal.

Really? ok I stand corrected. I was under the impression that it was limited to AMD cards via partnership. and that Nvida support was stricly some kind of patching. I know that the desktop performance on the 970s that I have doesn't seems to be as snappy as my AMD cards.

(most) NVIDIA cards require NVIDIA Web Drivers for proper functionality. These drivers are not (yet) available for Mojave.

Any current updates to this thread? I have two 2012 12 core Mac Pro's running High Sierra and want to replace/upgrade the graphics card so I can instal the latest OS preserving the boot screen with out to much hassle and cost. Any new thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Outside of MVC flashing select cards, OpenCore has been the best solution for a PC video card + getting an actual boot loader screen.

If you want a cheaper solution go on eBay search "GTX 680 for mac" or "HD 7950 for mac" should be about 150 dollars
Not necessarily cheaper. Considering you can pick up an RX570 or RX580 for ~$100 used, both of those cards perform miles behind the 570/580, and are more expensive. Not worth it when in a few terminal commands you can have a better performing computer & a boot screen

How do you get boot screen for 570/580?
