Final note on trying to put Mojave on an OWC Aura equipped Mac Pro. OWC doesn't seem to know what to do. I actually got more help from Apple than them. But the advice from tsialex helped get my original Apple SSD booting and updated to Mojave so I will just go back to that, even though it is a slight 256gb in size.

I'll miss the 1tb space of the OWC, but my thunderbolt connect external drive has more than enough space for all apps and data, just lacks convenience.

I have no idea if this is true of all OWC Aura replacement SSDs or if it was just mine. I love to hear from other 2013 Mac Pro owners with the OWC Aura installed.
It’s a Aura problem, I’ve read the reviews and internally it’s 2 SSDs in a RAID0 config. Since Apple do not support installation on RAID drives anymore…

Apple dropped that with Mojave? Hmm. I have it running 10.3.6. and, as stated earlier, it can't be upgraded to Mojave.

Once again, thank you for the information. You should collect all this in a blog or wiki somewhere.

Dropped RAID installs with APFS. You couldn't install it with 10.13.6 and APFS. Since Mojave only work with AFPS…

Hi all,

I have the same issue here Macpro Late 2013 with OWC Aura SSD, but my Boot Rom version already the latest. So sad.

[doublepost=1538955548][/doublepost]I’m having the same issue but I’m a lot more angry. When I make a major purchase I expect to not have to switch drives to install simple os upgrades. OWS continues to sell the SSD! One mistake on my part and I’m out 4 grand.
I was hoping they would have resolved issue with Apple.

all you need is the Mojave patch app and a thumb drive...
get the patcher here:
http://dosdude1.com/mojave/

Leave your OWC AURA in the MP6.1
download the full-size Mojave installer with the patcher app (tools > Download MacOs Mojave)
and create a modified installer for unsupported Macs (even so the MacPro6.1 lists as supported) unto your thumb drive
restart from it and install Mojave to your now miraculously supported internal AURA
(be patient it needs quite some time without showing you any progress, go jogg in the woods or watch am movie...)

Worked for me with a 4TB OWC AURA SSD in a MacPro6.1
and upgraded my previous HighSierra to Mojave, didn't need to reformat the drive and migrate my data from backup!

Hello, anyone tried this for mac pro 2013 with aura pro SSD ? does it work ? Thanks !

Hello, finally I wrote to OWC who replies this :

"I would recommend backing up your Aura onto another drive. Then installing Mojave OS X 10.14 to the original Apple SSD. After that you would want to use software such as Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the Apple SSD to the Aura."

This is what i did and worked perfectly for me... so simple and easy ...

1) Back up internal aura pro ssd (time machine AND clone in case of any problem with time machine)
2) Put original apple ssd in internal of your mac pro
3) install mojave on the apple ssd internal (APFS)
4) put your aura pro in internal of your mac pro
5) boot on your apple ssd external with the case you got with your aura pro (USB)
6) format your aura pro in APFS and then clone your apple ssd external on your aura pro internal
7) boot on your internal drive aura pro : you have mojave !
8) with the migration assistant import your last time machine save and you got it !

Hope this helps all people who was in the same case.

Have a great day everybody !

Due to problems of resetting the Mavell raid controller chips on the controller board of the OWC Aura - the extra cables for direct power supply from the MP6,1 are powered on longer as the PCI Bus is stable - before booting in step 5) you definitely should pull the mains to make the capacitors of the MP6,1 empty. This assures the OWC Aura is recognized properly by the boot system.

I have 10.13.6 installed on the OWC with HFS+. I haven't even looked at the FS on the APPLE SSD running Mojave.
Were you ever able to resolve this issue with your Aura 1TB drive? OWC now says they know how to fix it. They offer "free" rentals of the OEM Apple SSD with OWC Drive Guide.app installed with no OS. But I haven't been able to get my monitor to see the drive they gave me. Very frustrating.

@verticis: The dosdude path you suggested didn‘t work for me either. One has to stick with OWC‘s way: Determine the size of the original Apple blade ssd you intend to put in, trim your start volume on the Aura, do the copy with CCC (don’t miss to pay Mike for this fantastic piece of software) to the external original Apple, switch the hardware, the original Apple is now in, detach every other drive and start on. Now you are booting in the original blade and you may update to Mojave the normal way. Shut down, detach the mains properly, fit the OWC blade into your MacPro 6,1 and boot pressing the alt key. Select the external ssd in the envoy case (the original apple with mojave) and do the copy job via CCC back again. Shut down, detach the mains (5 Sec at least), put the envoy off the USB and wait booting into Mojave on the internal SSD OWC Aura.

I made a backup using CCC on a separate drive. I also have a TimeMachine backup. Why can't I simply format the external Apple SSD with Sierra. Then, swap it with the Aura into the MacPro, update it to Mojave. Shutdown, then, swap out the Apple SSD with the Aura SSD. Start up and update to Mojave? What am I missing? If it is the firmware that needs to be updated wouldn't the process of installing Mojave the first time on the Apple SSD while it is in the MacPro do that? Am I over simplifying this?

The Apple installer will gray out any drive to install Mojave to as long as the array of blades, called Aura, is inside the MacPro6,1. As you have your BS ready to swap in using CCC, you may do so, but dont forget the reset of the Mavell controller chip in the Aura by pulling the mains before, otherwise you end with a question mark for a missing system.

Sorry for missing deeper evaluation @verticis: Mr. Collin's installer refused to operate from a 16GB USB 3.0 Stick (it seems apple refuses to bless such small sticks) but did operate with a 64GB Stick (MacOS10.14.2). This will keep the aura in the MACPro 6,1 alive until the next OS release.

Hi felix13,

This worked for me. Not first go as it would hang when performing the upgrade from the patched OS.

Here's two things I did before it would work (not sure which one's most important as I did them both at the same time; sometimes don't want to learn, just want to fix things:)).

1. Used a 256 GB SSD rather than a 32 GB memory stick (this was mentioned in one of the posts).

2. The Mojave Patcher makes mention that the version of the installer is critical:
"Important Note: 10.14.4 CANNOT be patched properly using Mojave Patcher version 1.2.3 and older. If you update to 10.14.4, and HAVE NOT updated your installer volume with version 1.3.0 or later of Mojave Patcher, you WILL NOT be able to get your system to boot after updating! Please read the updates section for more info.

Given this, I made sure I used the latest version of Mojave Patcher but then let it download the installer rather than getting it myself via the App Store.
"by using the built-in downloading feature of the tool. In the Menu Bar, simply select "Tools > Download macOS Mojave..."

I don't know dosdude1 at all but am very grateful. At great expense, I bought my 4 TB Aura SSD about a week before High Sierra came out with no inkling that it may not be recognised by the future OS's as valid hardware. It was a scary pain to upgrade by the swap / installation / swap / clone / migrate method. Hopefully dosdude1 continue their good work and creates a macOS <10.15.x> Patcher when the need arises!

Not offhand. I don't have any SSD mounts for the 2010. All the drive bays are full. I guess I could get one and pull out a drive to get this done.

OWC provided an enclosure for the Apple SSD to be be used as an external drive. It works well as that, but even if you make it bootable it doesn't show up as that on either system.
It probably will if you hook it up via a USB hub rather than direct into the machine.

Clean it first, create a 10.13.6 createinstallmedia USB key, then remove the original disk from the enclosure and install into the 6,1. After that is just the install 10.13.6, then Mojave, then 10.14.1DP1.

You will be with the most recent firmware and will only need to do that again later after Apple release the sucessor of 126.0.0.0.0.

Is there a away to just perform the Upgrade to the latest firmware, like a firmware only update?

For years, Apple do the upgrades when you upgrade macOS, usually with Security Updates or with new releases. Mojave 10.14.5 has the current 130.0.0.0.0 firmware.

I ment to just performing firmware upgrade to the latest, without performing a full install
[doublepost=1558009764][/doublepost]There was something like that for the 5.1 if I remember right?

You can install an OS onto the Aura , or any other attached drive, in a 2013 if you update the boot rom first, using an internal apple ssd. Then you should be right to go . the current boot rom for the 6,1 is 134.0.0.0.0 (thanks tsialex)

QUESTION Does anyone know the correct supplementary voltage for the Aura card ? (Is it 5v, black wire positive ??) I am thinking of putting one in a housing as i have a applepcie->sata3 bridge.

Using a small permanent magnet in place of the little one in the aluminium housing let you measure polarity and current under working conditions of the MacPro. Owning an Aura SSD with a Mavell controller for the attached blades definitely prevents you from installing a working copy of the current MacOS regardless the number of your Boot-Rom-Version. Only single blade Auras have a chance for updates without the Carbon Copy Cloner.

I dont have the machine at the moment, just the surplus owc card. Putting it another way, does anyone have the voltage and polarity of these two pins from the top right of the board in a 6,1 ??
