Did you go to preferences, startup-disk and select the newly installed disk as your boot-disk after you replaced the disk? This has a HUGE impact on boot time, otherwise you'll be staring at a white screen after the chime for 10-20secs before the grey apple appears.

There's really no scientific reason why you should have to reinstall your OS to make it boot fast.

I agree that it should make a difference, thanks for the pointer about making it the boot disk. I'm going to clone first then if my results are poor (I could use a fresh install anyway) I'll format and reload everything.

I plan on ordering a mini in a week or so and I believe I am going to order a Momentus XT hybrid drive to go along with it. I've watched a few videos of its performance and it seems like a neat concept. Just wanted to see if anyone here has any hands on experience with its performance.

How about dual Momentus XT's in a late 2009 mini-non-server? Any experience with that set up? If so, how is it working out?

Just ordered a Momentus XT the other day to replace my 250GB 5400RPM.
Still booting from a SSD, but I decided that if I'm going to replace my HDD, why not replace it with the best non-SSD drive available? Didnt want another SSD because of the cost per GB for just general storage :p

Good move.

Just hope the platters don't get messed up with all the serious tremors you've been having in kiwiland.

Until SSD prices come way down, why not get the boot benefit from a small SSD and then use a platter for large data files, like you are doing.

Wow. Sounds promising. May have to consider this at Christmastime!

Thanks for all the real world experience!

Maybe by then (December) small SSD's will come down to respectable price levels so that you can go from the XT's 20 seconds to the 5 seconds I get with my 40GB SSD from OWC. They were $99 when I bought mine.

It's not just the boot time but everything I open comes up real quick. Thinking of editing-it could save hours.

Just a note on the cloning. I did clone my new Momentus XT from my original WD Black 7200rpm using Superduper. I had the described lonnnnng white screen before the apple appeared which probably has to do with setting the boot drive. I didn't know about this so I just reset my PRAM and that solved the issue (I assume because it had to relearn the boot drive?).

My MBP 13 2009 2.26GHz now boots in 25 seconds from hitting the power to iStat menus completely loading across the top.

Just crossing my fingers that I don't have beachball issues as described in several forums after a month or so of use :-(
