I'm also wondering this. I have a old TV and when the Wii comes out I want to upgrade but I also want an external monitor for my MBP. I was hoping to pick up a Dell and use it as both.

Hey if you find any answers before I do. Let me know. I'll do the same. Cause it sounds like we are in exact same boat.

I want Wii. I want something to display the Wii. I have to video edit. I need something to display that also.

So i thought maybe there can be something that I can use to combine both.

IIRC, the N64 had built-in aliasing which caused a terrible blur; I'm sure that it gets worse as the picture is blown up.
That's one of the reasons the DS version of SM64 looks so much better.

Also, the Wii can run in widescreen and 480p.

in the winter i bought a 32 inch viewsonic lcd tv for doing big work, the resolution is pretty good, not like an apple monitor but big enough to do graphic work. I've been satisfied with it for both purposes, tv/monitor. if i had the 3 g's then i would have gotten a apple display, but 800 sounded good to me at the time and i went for it.:D resolution is 1360X768 at 60hz

A LCD TV would have low resolution so working in Final CUT would be pretty awful.
and they are much more expensive in relation to size of other LCD monitor's non TV> just dvi and Vga.

I don't think SD will look crap on a monitor. Reason: the resolution of HDTV is 1920x1080. resolution of ACD 23" 1920x1200. sure SD is lower res, but if it looks crap on a monitor cause they are high res, what will they look like on a high res TV?

Samsung offer a 1920x1200 monitor that has DVI, VGA, composite and svideo inputs, or they offer a tv with same specs as monitor, only difference is built in speakers and tv tuner(and expensive $1500vs $3000 Aussie dollars).

The only reason I believe some monitors don't make good TV's is their response time isn't as good as a tv. This only affects fast moving objects and is really only noticable when watching sport.

SD will look bad on high res monitors and tvs. SD only has a resolution of 640x480 where has your typical High res tv or monitor has at least a resolution of 1024x768. High quality monitors have good response times so it doesn't affect the picture quality when watching tv, it's mainly a resolution problem.

So is it better to get a LCD TV? Or would that not work well then with you Mac?

I'm looking for a monitor that I can play gamecube on and then switch over and edit on Final Cut...

The component (blue, green, and red inputs, I think) inputs will work fine for your gamecube. I have my XBOX going directly in on my 24 dell and it looks great. I simply switch by pressing the input button on the fron of the monitor. For audio, I bought $10 worth of adapters that allow me to connect the Red and yellow audio cords to powered coputer speakers. Works great.

Oh Cool I didn't think Component cords worked in Composite slots? They do though? Or I'd have to go by Composite cords for my gCube?

Now only if there was a way to make the monitor switch and turn on and off with a remote.

Isn't that the truth... We bought a Plasma and man oh man DirectTV looks worse since we don't want to pay the high price for HD from them (that and your don't get alot of the channels in HD)...

Well then If You buy a TV with a resolution higher than 1024x768, which if you want to enjoy HDTV you would, when viewing sd will be crap, so might as well just get a monitor then.
SD over here is higher res than 640x480, its 720x576, and high def, is either 1280x720, or 1920x1080.

We don't pay for HD over here, It's free, same as SD, and we still broadcast the same shows in analogue, all free. Sure you can buy Foxtel(sattellite) but you don't pay more for HD, It's whatever the station broadcasts in you get.

Oh not here. Want HD have to replace the satelite box, and pay more for the serviece, and heck sometimes even replace the Satelite dish itself...

I think the public broadcasting stations do broadcast in HD now... but I could be wrong.
