still having trouble downloading Monterery on a 18 MacBook Air with the original drive. I did a clean install of Big Sur then tried to download Monterery on a completely clean computer and get this message:

Yes I understand this is a .01 version of a new OS yet this has been nothing but a nightmare trying to install on hardware that is barely three years old and still can't. Don't say they don't force you to update well they do when they quit making security patches. I know this is cliche to say, Tim needs to go any CEO that allows this horrible experience year after year after year. Just step down you obviously don't care if Apple products are good.

I tried to do this last night, the upgrade. I too got the error message regarding the firmware issue with the non apple SSD in it (Currently Aura Pro X2) I did put the original SSD back in that came with my Mac Pro 6,1 but same deal it still failed to install even with a active internet connection / using the downloadassets option. Might need to investigate using Open core

EDIT: Okay I tried Open core, that failed. Would not even launch the installer. A lot of people have reported putting the original apple ssd back in will fix the issue. Well I can confirm that is the case, I was able to put mint back in, insured it had an internet connection and it installed successfully. I then put the Aura Pro X2 back in, performed the upgrade and all went through well.

I was having the same problem with installing Monterey OS. At first I got file system error. I made a backup on a flash drive and copied Monterey to a different flash drive. Left the original HD in the machine and booted into Recovery. Used Disk Utility to change the file system and then tried to install Monterey from my flash drive. I go the firmware missing error. I booted into Recovery and installed the original OS, Mojave via the internet. With the fresh install, didn't transfer any of my saved files, I then used the flash drive that had the copy of Monterey it (no assets) to install the new OS. Worked like a charm. I know people had a few variations with other hard drives and getting the error but hopefully this helps someone.

I am waiting for my Crucial P5 1TB NVMe to install. I also ordered a USB enclosure for it. I already have Monterey running on my original Apple SSD now. Should I install Monterey on the Crucial P5 while in the enclosure first and then install it into my MBP (early 2015)?

So, did anyone ever get any further on this without installing the original SSD?

Also, Is this issue only for updating to Monterey after a third party SSD is installed, or can it affect updates to earlier systems such as updates to Catalina or Big Sur? Is this a new action by Apple against our Right to Repair starting with Monterey? Once updated to Monterey, does this issue repeat for each point release of Monterey as the replacement SSD continues to be present?

Have people been able to update to Monterey 12.2 with a third party SSD installed before the newest Monterey update came out?

I just installed the latest Monterey update on my NVMe drive with no issue.

Pre-installed Monterey on my new Crucial NVMe drive in an enclosure ready to install in my MBP. Interesting, though. I formatted it as Encrypted (with a password) but I wasn’’t allowed to install Monterey on a password protected drive so I had to go with non-encrypted. That’s okay. No biggie.

As an update, once Monterey is installed, no other firmware/ssd exchanges are needed. Currently update mid 2015 MBP 15 inch to Monterey 12.2 without incident.

Would someone clarify when firmware update happens: before or after installation of macOS itself?

I need to update firmware to Monterey (for different reasons) but I don't have enough space on the main internal SSD partition (Apple original one) and want to keep Big Sur. I'd like to attempt the following procedure: 1) create a bootable USB with macOS Monterey 12.2 installer; 2) install new OS onto an external SSD connected via USB 3.1. Will this be enough to force Monterey firmware update on my internal MacBook Pro components?

P.S. Why my answers are always moderated for like 24 hours? It should be quite clear I'm a human being with some specific Mac-related topic to discuss...

That was the case for me but the latest update broke it. Hell, I never needed to swapped the SSD's before, had no problems installing Monterey or updating it various times. With the latest update I could only boot into safe mode, and unfortunately I made the mistake of wiping my disk.

Would the swapping of the original SSD fix it with this newest update? I'm deciding on whether to buy a used laptop.

Still an issue. Tried upgrading from 11.6.1 to 12.6. Received a message to the effect of a driver was not updated and the current volume was not supported. Good thing I still have my old SSD. What a pain.

The suggested fix worked. LUCKILY I still had my old SSD. I put the old one in, but had to delete a bunch of files to free up room to install 12.6. Then I put the new SSD in and was able to upgrade no problem.

This is ridiculous. I feel for those who didn't keep their old SSD--or---who are struggling with this and don't know how to fix it.
