More evidence on the iminent iMac 2011

It has been widely expected that iMacs will receive an update fairly soon. I've been saying April for months.
 
Nah, they're going to skip 2011 and wait until 2012 to update, just to make sure that whole "end of the world" thing doesn't pan out.
 
hellhammer, what do you think we will see in the gpu department next refresh, and do you think it will get a redesign?

I mean the imacs have had it share of problems the last few years.
 
YES!

AMD Radeon HD 6850(m), AMD Radeon HD 6870(m) and AMD Radeon HD 6970(m).
Then there's a big possibility these will be the cards for the upcoming iMac.

21" iMac: HD 6850m and HD 6870m as upgrade
27" iMac: HD6870m and HD 6970m as upgrade

I was really hoping for the HD 6970m to come in the upcoming iMac 27" (wich I'am waiting for to buy) and chances are it really could be so!
But I do hope it can be cooled well, without too much noise.
 
Apple will most likely be putting 6950m in the 27 inch iMac, as it's the direct predecessor of 5850m. You can easily turn your 6950m into 6970m by overclocking it in windows-- same with 5850m to 5870m.
 
Gah, I Already feel my Mac is outddated, damn you Apple!! Late 09' still rips, maybe just throw a few more gigs of ram and feel better about it :D

Except the world is ending December 21,2012 so theyd have to wait til 2013.

Those are my predictions about 2011 iMac.
 
That would be great if they re-designed the iMac. The current one still looks sleek, but it could use an update (maybe I feel that way because I've had and iMac with the current design since '09).

I bet it will have the same RAM but better graphics, better processors, and Thunderbolt. If they add a redesign on top of that, that would be great, although I don't know what that would do to the price (they were able to keep the same price for the iPad 2 even though they upgraded it to a new design).

That would mean that Mac Pro owners (and why not crazy iMac owners too) could use a PC version of the GPU. Nowadays, you have to buy Apple's version of the GPU and as you may guess, they are heavily overpriced compared to PC counterparts. Especially since Apple does not update the Mac Pro very often.

Okay, that's also would I thought. But what is "native graphics acceleration", since this leads to support of this?

I recall it being several years since there was a rumor that Apple would start doing this. Got me quite thrilled back then, since I was gaming quite a bit.
 
IF top-end of upcoming 2011 27" iMac actually use 6950 or 6970M, what do you think sir?

Can they play Crysis 2 (via bootcamp of course) on max settings (include AF/AA) let's say on 1080p and get proper >=60FPS?

I really want those 2011 iMac and screw people out there who said iMac is not for gaming. This year i hope Apple prove them wrong
 
all i can say is no matter what, the 2011 iMac is going to be SICKKKKKKKKKKK!!! :D;) Sandy bridge is what its all about guys, it improves EVERYTHING you do, and the new ATI Graphic cards.. oh god :p:D

Cant wait to the release. i think i will buy the new iMac like first week its released
 
Those seem to be pretty good guesses Hellhammer, but didn't apple say they are introducing new screen sizes? Or was that just a rumor? I'd sure like to see 23" as the intro size, or a 24" model in the mix, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
 
I've got an early 2008 24" iMac. It is still sleek looking and runs the latest Adobe Suite flawlessly.

I'm still interested in the next update but will probably wait one or two more revisions before I pull the trigger on my next iMac.
 
Sandy Bridge + Imac = hot CPU temps just like the Macbook Pro....:eek:
It will be fast but be ready for the rumble of turbo fans and Kp's if you are doing anything serious...

some people make me laugh - comparing laptops to desktops...... desktops will not inherit all issues that the laptops have :apple:

Doubt that. 6950M is based on desktop 6850 and even it cannot run the original Crysis @1920x1200 with +60FPS (link). Not sure what is the case with Crysis 2 though.

iMac is never going to be a gaming monster unless Apple does a total redesign to incorporate high-end desktop GPUs. Mobile GPUs will never be able to match their desktop counterparts.

You can't compare them. In 13" MBP, Apple went from 25W CPU to 35W CPU and in 15/17", from 35W CPU to 45W CPU. However, the CPUs for iMacs are 65W and 95W while the current ones are 73W and 95W.

Given that the iMacs are essentially laptop hardware on a stand (GPU, CPU RAM etc, in this case the comparison is accurate, an iMac is a laptop stuck to the back of a screen, hopefully apple will actually stress test the new iMacs rather than ship them from factory to customer with the glue still drying (like the iPad 2s and iPhones before them).

:apple: quality control is actually crap, thats why applecare is SO important, your buying the american dream, Mid range kit, sold as performance, made by the lowest bidder with the cheapest parts for the most profit, keep that in mind.

now hurry up Steve and realease the new iMacs already, i need a new desktop !!! :D:D:D

That used to be correct, but not any more. A couple refreshes ago (actually, it might have been this last one when we moved to the iX processors), Apple started using desktop components in the iMac.
