I do wonder how well the iPhone will work for just phone calls. I hope Apple did not forget first and foremost it is a phone. Sure, it can do and may become more but if people are paying $60+ a month for phone service it must do phone very well. I think the big issue here is how many "touches" does it take to make a call and will they include voice dialing in v2.0?

All that being said, don't forget this is version 1.0, maybe 1.5 if you count the upgrades last week to the glass and battery. I'm sure the iphone will improve much like the ipod did, which is why I will wait 6 months or so when v2.0 is released.

Confirmation Bias is a bitch, isn't ?

If you think waiting 1 min to open amazon or NYtimes is acceptable, then more power to you, but we are living in 2007. No one is arguing that the iPhone is a kickass phone, it certainly is. What is not okay is paying 20$ extra on your plan to get ISDN-like speeds.

Here's the thing.

"EDGE is not 3G, hence EDGE is 'slow' and 'like dialup'"

Any data that contradicts this flawed, overarching statement will be summarily dismissed, not because of the actual facts of the matter (EDGE in ATTs current configuration, which uses half of its available band, btw, has average speeds of 22Kbytes per second, and the averagre size for a professionally designed validating web page is about 230K - 300K, meaning it takes an average of about say, 12 seconds with overhead to transming the data at those "pokey" speeds, even tho the page starts to render almost immediately...) but because its not what you want.

So any exaggeration towards your bias will simply be given more weight.

I have an unlimited data plan and a phone that uses both EGDE and WCDMA and you know what?

I keep it set on EDGE. Am I stupid? Am I a rube?

No. I just need to be sure that if I *NEEEEEDDDDDD* to look a a query, or grab an email, I can...wherever am. I like being able to NOT HAVE TO have 2 batteries to get thru the day. Because using the PHONE to TALK to PEOPLE is a much higher priority than pulling up a webpage in 5 seconds instead of 14 seconds.

3G is nice...but its NOT BLAZING FAST EITHER. It is effectively 2.2ish times faster as "painfully slow" EDGE (depending on coverage and strength) so by this measure...

What is 2x "painfully slow"? "Barely adequate"?

Why don't you list a bunch of webpages that you MUST SEE in less than 20 seconds, and I'll run them thru and see how long they take.

Then, give me a list of pages you absolute;y must, MUST see in less than 10 seconds...I'll do those too.

We'll see how close we get over EDGE.

...Most of that problem could be solved with a voice dialing ability. Someone above also suggested a row of buttons on the home desktop with several frequently called numbers. That would also help. Maybe a dedicated wheel control on the side of the phone: press it and scroll to the number you want. In short the iPhone interface seems too fussy to me. On the other hand, I can't wait to get one.

The beauty of the iPhone interface is that it can be changed... say you are right and a scroll wheel makes sense. Apple's multi-touch patent illustrates that as a UI option-- they just display a scroll wheel (maybe transparently) on the screen with the list... Voila! Or, maybe CoverFlow, voice recognition, hot-keys... or things we haven't thought of, yet. Apple and/or 3rd parties will adapt the iPhone to the needs/desires of the users and applications.

That's the unspoken advantage of iPhone over all the key-laden competitors.

It might be fun if Apple offered an iPhone kit-- a virtual Leggo Mindstorm, where you could assemble the various UI features: ScrollWheel, Hot-Key, Pinch, Flick, Press, Tap, Squeeze, (Stroke, Fondle) etc. That way the user could play with the various UI elements and choose which he wants to use on the various data and media.

I believe that the iPhone will not only revolutionize the cell phone industry, but will spawn replacements for a lot of gadgets that complicate our lives...

For, example imagine an iPhone-like UI for your home universal remote control-- that you could use in a dark room (looking at it, or not). A device that contained all the schedules & ability to schedule your PVR; control media devices; turn on/off the furnace/lights/sprinklers; monitor security, kids, air quality; see who's at the front door and open/lock it.

A really, really universal remote that anyone could use, intuitively.

The hardware, and most of the UI software already exists within today's iPhone. All you need is a few new applications/widgets. But, that sure is an expensive universal remote...

...or is it?

For the fun of it...

Dialup is the only option at my house. We have 6 people in the family, and so pay for 3 phone lines. I don't know what the first line cost, but each additional is another $10 a month. Cost of paying for dialup service for the internet is something like $40 total for all 3 lines.
Total cost for dialup internet, $60 a month.

I'm glad you all have the affluence to whine about cell speeds and what they cost

I don't know how accurate it is, but according to this 36% of internet users are still on dialup.

As far as Amazon loading slow. %^&* Amazon. Their main site is trash, and all I do is wait and watch until the search bar appears and hit "stop". I shop elsewhere normally...

Or...let me put it another way...

If you think waiting 1 min to open amazon or NYtimes is acceptable, then more power to you, but we are living in 2007. No one is arguing that the iPhone is a kickass phone, it certainly is. What is not okay is paying 20$ extra on your plan to get ISDN-like speeds.

If you think waiting more than 30 seconds to open amazon or NYtimes over 3G is acceptable, then your sense of perspective of how "fast" 3G is is skewed...

Because it does.

The NYTimes pages is *especially* slow because of all of the backlinking it does.

And note, this was *without flash or java*...i removed the plugins to *speed it up*.

Apple.com took 9 seconds to load...even with all of those "Oooo iPhone!!" graphics.

Over actual real broadband?

2. 2 seconds.

So while its slower, and no one is denying its "slower" a crap page is a crap page. There are many metrics at play here.

Bottom like it tho, it is what it is and you get what you get.

...is that the US government considers "broadband" anything over 200kbps :)

Note the last graph lists the percentage as "dial-up", not "none broadband".
I'm pretty sure there are no other forms of "dial-up" besides 56.6k modems and slower derivatives.
And I didn't give the right percentage. It's actually 36%, not 34%.

I liked David Pogue's take on the iPhone. It was biased, but accurate. The video was amusing, too. :)

This week's already an exciting one. Can't wait 'til Tuesday!:apple:

Actually I loved his video review too. He loved it BUT the end when the pack of NY Times employees runs after him when they find he has an iPhone and then are dissapointed and leave when they hear: "it's only on ATT" and "the Battery can't be removed." Yes these are two issues!!!

AT&T is a big issue for me. My wife works for Verizon Wireless, so as far as I'm concerned the iPhone for me is on hold until I can get one with Verizon. Nothing against :apple: , but I have to support the company that pays her salary.

Not only that, AT&T is awful in the areas I go. So there would still be some consideration to look into.

it's very dangerous to be driving with one hand and using your phone with the other hand. it's illegal where i live.

It's illegal here, too - which is why a visual-only interface which I can't dial blindly using fingers or ideally by voice over my in-car handsfree kit is a no-go for a phone.

It is a supremely sexy device - I just wonder how good of a phone it will be.

Here is a link to fox news, Neil Cavuto pressed him a little but this guy sounds like a polly anna on a witch hunt up in New England

WOW.
That was funny and sad at the same time. Talk about poor journalism.
I think the train of thought was something to the effect of.
All cell users are business users > All business users use exchange > All people who use exchange need to be able to handle meeting invites > The iPhone doesn't do this > thus the iPhone is a pointless product.

Come now, even I use an exchange server at work. But aside from not having to deal with that many meetings, I also don't need to get my email on my phone.

Only other gripe being that a yahoo site doesn't open in under 2 minutes  I mean, modem speeds are slow, but was he in a military bunker using a copper wire strung outside for reception?! He claims that's a fault of the iPhone, than when talking about AT&T doesn't mention EDGE speed, but goes on about how AT&T coverage sucks?! For starters, I don't think it sucks (or at least their are far more things to complain about with AT&T) and that's really a personal thing anyway.

His entire response should have been prefixed with "Well for me personally..."
