Yeah, I've never had that kind of a problem. With my 17" MBP, it looks just like the matte screen on my PowerBook. I've never detected any problems.

That would have bugged the heck out of me.
It seemed to vary in terms of excessiveness. Mine seemed to be about par or just over, given the amount of complaints about it at the time. You must have got lucky of maybe the 17" MBPs were less blighted.

No insurance at the time. I was renting and the house as it was probably wouldn't have met the standards for insurance anyway. It was laughably easy to break into. I lost about £5k worth of Apple stuff and just had to write it down to experience.

Basically, they took everything except my Mac Mini G4. That kept me going until I got my Santa Rosa MBP.

I can semi-relate, in that my Santa Rosa 15-inch MBP was stolen from me in ’09 (it had the LED display, which was pretty nifty).

While I hope the eventual “owner” of at laptop got hit with failing GPU within a matter of weeks, the pain of the theft was less the money (which was bad enough) and more that all my field work, data, and working drafts for my university thesis was on that hard drive. Although I’d submitted the final draft for the profs to accept, I suddenly had no way to refine or edit it for future publication.

To this day, I still can’t look at that submitted draft (more like a snapshot, really) because I think about what I’ll never be able to do with it.

These don't have the LED-backlit screen the OP wants and have a "grainy" anti-reflective coating.

On a lighter note, I invite you all to re-read this thread as I did, by parsing every instance of “grainy” as “granny”. 👓

Your best bet is probably the Early and Mid 2009 models. There's not much of a difference between them. But, you don't have the overheating issues of the Radeon X1600 Mobility on the Early and Late 2006; you don't have the inevitably failing GeForce 8600 GT issues of the 2007 and 2008; you don't have the GPU issues on the 2010; nor the inevitably failing issues of the Radeon HD 6000 series on the Early 2011 and Late 2011. So, yeah, 2009 is probably your safest bet. It's a Penryn Core 2 Duo, but you have the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and GeForce 9600M GT and you have manual control over which one is running when (compared to the auto-switching you have on 15", 16", and 17" MacBook Pros from 2010 through 2019).

hello.
can someone help me with the problem or tell me where to look for the answer.
MacBook Pro 17 2011 i7 2,2Mhz , in 2020 discrete graphics card failed, gave it to service, they turned off discrete gpu and said not reset PRAM.
yesterday my son installed the system catalina patcher and reset PRAM (did not know), the display is off (black always)!
I understand that again on discrete gpu.
tell me what to do?

As far as I know, it's either a solder or a UEFI hack to turn off the discrete GPU. Either way, I would not try to stick with that Mac as there are better ones both before and since that will give you less grief.
