so would these instructions be applicable to doing a fresh install of mountain lion on a new ssd. I want a clean install, new drive, new os, like a new MacBook . thx

I've actually been using this app as of late to make any bootable 10.8 USB drives, much quicker than going through disk utility.

As long as you have the installESD.dmg file from you ML download and this app and at least an 8GB USB, you're golden.
Lion DiskMaker

It works for making Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion drives.

After you boot from the drive, open disk utility and erase the current partition or just click to create a 1 partition drive and name the partition. Close Disk Utility then click to install OS X ML.
Clean install.

Vertex 4 256GB + ML (fresh install) + late 2009 MBP 17" 2.8C2D here; for the time being (still waiting for the hard disk bay), over USB2 only. No problems.

If you make the ML USB installer you can do a clean install on your SSD. That's exactly how I did it on my new SSD.

thx. I'm sure there is a thread here, but I've been following a 57 page thread on apple forums about a huge battery life prob with mountain lion so I'm going to clean install lion and wait and see. I'm sure I can figure out how to make a lion installer. thx for help

The easy way to do it is in mmomega's post above (Lion DiskMaker). I have had no battery life issues. Everything is running fine (knock on wood), other than I'm still not fond of Safari but am giving it another go.

Keep in mind that just installing an SSD should improve your battery life and would help to mitigate any adverse battery effect of ML.

thx, I will get lion disk maker. I suppose as well that one should keep in mind that though there are hundreds of people reporting battery problems w ML perhaps there are thousands that at not having issues.
