I am from Pakistan, and I don't know why it cost me this extra dollar. I used a US account to purchase and download the operating system. So what is the extra amount for? I am unaware about additional costs, so I would appreciate any information about taxes and so on.

Thanks!

Yep, you paid the state and local sales tax of whatever address you used on the account.

Taxes

Well, yeah, I guess it amounts to the tax then as I suspected. Thanks. I didn't know Mac App Store had taxes too! I had about 5.5 percent tax on it then.

OS X Mountain Lion is my first software purchase! In Pakistan, people always use pirated versions of softwares. Anyway ...

Here is me hoping it is worth it. :D

Here the hint! I'm in pakistan, but use a US account!

Well, I couldn't redeem my $100 iTunes card from within Pakistan stores. So I had to use it in the US stores! I guess I will be more aware of my further purchases from now on. Thanks everyone for the information and help.

Shoulda used a Delaware address! No sales tax! haha

The tax rate is still lower than in Pakistan though, where it is probably around 21 percent, at least for the local stuff we purchase. Not sure about internet transactions though.

Good for you, using Delaware address! :)

It only has sales tax in states that require it. For example, NY does, but MD doesn't.

So you bought a mac with the back to school promotion to get the $100 itunes gift card and discount yet you live in pakistan?

Yeah. A friend of mine studies there. I paid him to buy it for me. I study in a Pakistani university. Which was obviously not eligible since Pakistan has no significant Apple presence. No online stores and hence no B2S promotions. But yeah, the advantage is that my friend can also use the iTunes card. On his mac. :D So we pretty much collaborate on what we should buy. :D

Worth it? You just got an OS for $21. It is absurd that you would worry about it being worth it because you had to shell out less than a buck more.

This! That's what I was thinking! He got a major discount then kinda worry about tax!

Posters with negative replies need to broaden their horizons. First off, he lives in a country where almost no one buys software, they steal it. He said so himself. He and a friend, somewhat ingeniously, come up with a way to legitimately afford to buy it, and do so. He is not just concerned about the additional cost (tax), but the entire expenditure. You fail to understand that 100 USD in certain countries, to many people, equates to a small fortune. Remember when you were four or five years old and "rich" uncle so and so slipped you a 20 dollar bill? Well, that's how he feels.

Oh well, the replies here are definitely self-explanatory. :D

Yeah, I agree, we are a bit too savvy! In any case, however I got it I feel proud to have legally purchased a software for the first time.

Yeah, a dollar amounts to about a hundred rupees here. That is equal in numerical terms to $100 that I got for back to school promotion! Yeah. So that explains why I'd be very savvy about my software purchases.

In hundred rupees you can buy a cheap meal here, and be full with it!

My download is complete and took about 12 hours to download. :) Pretty modest for a 4 GB file for Pakistani standards.

I just paid a dollar for your American welfare! :) Perhaps not ...

Looking forward to Mountain Lion!

No kidding. This guy asked a legitimate question. He wasn't ranting, raving, nor gnashing his teeth ... simply asking why his 19.99 purchase was more than the advertised price.

The question was correctly answered by "tax". He accepted this fully.

Why folks now want to bash him for his question as well as his original purchase is beyond me.

Yep. If these self-centered replies above reflect the attitudes and world awareness of most Americans today, especially the younger generations, we are in even more trouble than ever. Notice how the OP puts the value of one dollar in perspective over there: a meal, that is enough to feel "full." Sadly, those that don't get it will more than likely spend four or five bucks today at Starbucks for a latte and not give it a second thought, even after reading his reply.

No offence taken!

You are very gracious and forgiving. I hope some of the other posters learn something from you. Welcome to Mountain Lion. It is a pretty good initial release and will only get better. Enjoy!

I'm sure if he can afford an apple computer in a country that have a really low living that mean he is doing something right to have a high income! So $1 is nothing to the person that can actually buy a thousands dollar computer when people maybe can't even get an expensive meal at $5. See what I did there!

This is actually funny. I purchased Mountain Lion yesterday. Almost 24 hours ago but so far Apple hasnt deducted a penny from my account. :p

This is like saying if a person saved up for a Ferrari by selling a lot of other valuables, he can still afford one more car.

If you mean 'respond as an a**', then yes, I see.

Yeap I'm dat number uno ****** u mad brah? Lolol anyways what I said was just plain true.

If you live in a third world country and can afford something that 90% of the populations cannot afford heck even a $5 that means you aint gonna worry about $1 tax!

Sounds like you do have some logics! :rolleyes:Dude you read yourself? A person that can afford a ferrari I'm sure he can afford more than 1 car! I have not seem anyone that stupid to sell everything just to buy a ferrari then live on the streets!really?

Unfortunately it is not the way things work in poor countries. If you'd have to save for a couple of years to get a basic Mac, even the single dollar makes a difference. It's a day's meal or no meal in Pakistan.

It's an exaggerated example. Basically, I'm saying that if a person saves up for something, it doesn't mean they can afford more things without further work.
