Whoa. This has surely taken on a wrong direction.

I think people here are overgeneralizing Americans when they say that they are unaware of people in the third world countries on the basis of two people's supposedly decrying remarks about my purchase.

I don't say the people who raised their concern about it were wrong. But I think we should look at the bigger picture. May be they are right, but basing a conclusion on two people's ignorant remarks about a third world country would not justify the fact that Americans are this or that ... at least logically.

Secondly being able to afford an expensive machine. I agree. I didn't save up. So yeah, my concern about a dollar being charged is very off-hand seemingly, but just like you can't compose a generalised statement, you can neither say that if an elephant is big, so its hair must be big too.

I think to justify my usage of expensive machine: Apple rocks over others and not everyone can afford it. Yes, that is an appeal to snobbery. :) But on the other hand, I was just raising my concern about why I was charged an extra dollar. I didn't buy the laptop. My parents' income did that. Now, about the 100 dollars I have with me, I would like to use them carefully in any case given that I can only use them for software purchases, and also because I have only these 100 dollars!

As for my comparison with the meals in Pakistan, well, I was putting things in a perspective, and not saying how Americans are very expensive and take things for granted. I was just comparing. So peace out people. And yeah, I agree it seems ironic for a person to worry about an extra dollar when they have already purchased above a 1000 dollars' worth of machine! But well, that was an investment. That is about the same as two reasonable PC laptops. Yes, I belong to a middle class family I suppose and my parents can buy an expensive machine.

On the other hand, I do not represent the large majority of Pakistanis who think I am stupid because I purchased a show-off machine. But I know better about which machine is better. Apple rocks.

I may have committed some fallacies myself. But sorry, my intentions for this thread were purely not to instigate this debate. I apologize sincerely to anyone who is distraught at my question.

Peace out.

No kidding. This guy asked a legitimate question. He wasn't ranting, raving, nor gnashing his teeth ... simply asking why his 19.99 purchase was more than the advertised price.

The question was correctly answered by "tax". He accepted this fully.

Why folks now want to bash him for his question as well as his original purchase is beyond me.
