I have tried mouse support on a jailbroken iPad and the user experience was the same as it is without it, you just have the ability to use a mouse. It really doesn't negatively affect anything at all. Again, it all comes down to money with Apple, as it always does (and probably should to some degree).

As is the same regarding user experience when using a mouse on Android devices.

Yea definitely, shouldn't be any difference. Google doesn't make any money on hardware though, or really sells computers, so they don't care if you own 1 device or two. As long as they can sell you ads.

Pretty sure that all the people who are so much against mouse support have never really used the iPad Pro with the keyboard for an extended period of time, doing work that is not related to art.
Once apple introduced the keyboard and is so heavily marketing the iPad Pro with the keyboard, it must also introduce some sort of touchpad or mouse support. Working on the iPad for more than one hour while it is docked to the keybaord, having to reach out and touch the screen for everything is just not ergonomic and is causing arm fatigue / pain.
This is exactly why apple never created a touchscreen Mac, because reaching out to touch the screen while sitting in a desk is just uncomfortable and unproductive (at least according to quotes I have seen from Steve Job).
So instead of creating a touchscreen Mac, they went ahead and created the docked iPad :)

I understand that the iPad is a touch first device and that works great when we are holding it in our hands. When docked to the keyboard however it's just uncomfortable having to reach out and touch the screen for everything, specifically on the bigger 12.9 model.

People who are so much against Mouse / Touchpad support have probably never used a 2in1 Chromebook with android apps. The Keyboard and mouse work great with them, and so does touch in tablet mode.
They have also probably never used an Android tablet with a mouse and keyboard. It also works very well when you would like to be more productive.

I agree with other posters that Mouse support is probably coming, but I assume it will be an Apple iPad specific mouse or touchpad and they will charge extra for it...

Excellent post! Totally agree with you on this.

No I hate windows and iOS > Windows.

Mouse is for 90s.

Now We are in Touch Screen and 2020s.
What in the world?

Apple (ahem, the creators of the Mac) pioneered the mouse.

iOS is a mobile operating system and you just compared it with a full blown OS (Windows).

The mouse will never, ever go away.

Sums it up perfectly.

I ordered my first iPad and I was hesitant at first because you can't do development on them.. I started looking into what other devs do to overcome this obstacle and started looking into RDP/VNC apps...

I was instantly sold when I found Jump Desktop (that had support for a Bluetooth mouse with an iPad (thanks Citrix)).

I really don't think the iPad needs mouse input. What needs a mouse input is RDP/VNC clients that run ON the iPad. If Apple allowed a generic Bluetooth mouse and a way for devs to implement the mouse in their app, I would be all for it.

I don't want a mouse on the home screen though.

I understand why people say this, but to be clear, simply having mouse support doesn't mean you'd have an arrow floating on the home screen. It would only show up when you connect a mouse. Check out YouTube for videos on how it's been implemented in Android (going on five years now).

I found a somewhat lame workaround for people who feel the arm fatigue like me when working on the 12.9'' iPad pro with the keyboard and need to touch the screen constantly.
I purchased one of those cheap, extra long styluses from Amazon. Using that I can almost reach every corner of the screen without needing to lift my arm too much. The added bonus is that the cheap generic stylus can perform ALL the UI interactions on the screen (something that the Apple Pencil can not for some reason) such as show the notifications, change the window size in split screen mode, bring up the dock in iOS11 etc..
While not a perfect solution and certainly not a touchpad, it is somewhat helpful for longer iPad Pro 12.9 work sessions.
The one I purchased is linked below if anyone is interested:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CRY56M4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has pretty good touch response and is very light.

I have tried to use the Apple Pencil as well, but it's too short, heavy and most importantly it can not perform all the UI interactions the finger can.

I also have the citrix mouse and use it with Jump Remote when I need to work on more demanding tasks, but really, this stuff should be built in. If Android can do it well I can't see why Apple can't. I prefer the stylus mentioned above when working on the iPad.

Sure, but many businesses do not support Jump and RDP doesn't have mouse support.

Correct. It seems to me there is nothing stopping, for example, Citrix or Logitech (or anyone else) releasing a mouse and an API for other developers though. If anyone thought it would be profitable, I'm sure they would have. It would only be profitable if: -

a) Enough users were actually demanding this
b) Enough developers were willing to add the API

I don't think a) is particularly true, outside of echo chambers like MR, and therefore b) will likely never happen.

They may also come up with a system that allows you to use your iPhone as a trackpad for the iPad. I'd go for that. :)

THIS! I was literally thinking about something like this today! It would be cool IMO if there was some type of “airplay connect” where your iOS devices acted together as on screen hardware...such as an iPhone being a mouse for the iPad/Mac and the iPad serving as a keyboard for the Mac or another iPad.

Apple will eventually need a solution when it comes time to release a 27" iPad. Right now, poking at the screen isn't TERRIBLE on the 9.7, but needing your arms to navigate a 27" iPad would be extremely exhausting very quickly.

I don't understand why people want to replace a laptop with an iPad and a keyboard and a mouse.
Just use a laptop if it fits your needs.

In answer to the question no I don't. Apple don't seem to want touch screens on Mac OS or a mouse on iOS. I think they are correct in their decision on both systems.

It's the pursuit and desire to have to buy and carry only one device that does it all. That is my dream at least.

While I admit it is funny to see people clamoring for Apple to turn the iPad into a Mac little by little, the other way to look at it is that Apple has rebuilt the fundamentals of computing from scratch with iOS (the App Store, security, software updates, touch interactions), and if we are to accept iOS as the future of computing, it needs to be as equally capable as the previous paradigm.

For some tasks, like working in Excel, not having a mouse is a big hindrance to productivity. Maybe that is Microsoft's fault for trying to port desktop-style software to a touchscreen, but still, having the ability to jump between two cells that are far apart on a tiny spreadsheet is a lot more work with a touchscreen that a mouse.

It's also Apple that has created this situation in the first place. They were the ones that introduced iWork for iPad since Day 1. They want us to use iPads like computers.

If iOS is the future of computing, then Apple will have to address this eventually when it comes time for even larger iPads.

Exactly. Great post.
I have been saying for ages now that this whole mouse mess is apples fault in regards to how they are advertising the iPad Pro Line. How can you say in one breath that touch on a Mac won't work due to arm fatigue and or pain, yet push it on an iPad docked to a keyboard and not understand that the same arm fatigue and or pain will also occur? The docked iPad Pro desperately needs mouse support if you are going to push that the Pro line is a laptop replacement.

Completely agree. The iPad when docked on a Smart Keyboard really needs either a mouse or trackpad that sits beside the keyboard. This is the missing ingredient for a great experience. Using the Citrix mouse is amazing. This ability needs to be available in iOS apps.
