Hey guys ... trackpad is great, but sometimes it's more convenient to use a mouse, nice for a change too.

If you're going to buy a mouse I suggest the "Anywhere mouse" by Logitech. It's usb with a tiny dongle, not blue tooth but it works perfect on any surface ... you can use it on your jeans, glass table etc.

I agree with the Anywhere MX mouse, its great and theres a driver for mac on there site.

This mouse looks interesting. The description on the Amazon site says you can use the mouse on any surface. Is that true? That would be ideal for the Air because you don't have to carry a trackpad around.

I have used Mac laptops for eight years and until less than two years ago always used a mouse. I used a variety of mice, the last being a Magic Mouse. All of them were satisfactory but I got tired of them and resolved to learn how to use a trackpad comfortably. That was remarkably easy to accomplish and I have never looked back. I quickly came to prefer the trackpad to a mouse, not by a little but by a lot. My grandson has my Magic Mouse and I don't even know where the others are. There is a lot to be said for having one's navigational tools built in to one's laptop. My advice would be to ditch the mouse and use the trackpad exclusively. You will be surprised to see how little time it will take you to prefer it to a mouse.

I just went out purchased today a Logitech Wireless Mouse M305 from Office Max (on sale for like $15). Though I think it’s better to use the trackpad on the Air, the mouse is going to be more useful when I‘m doing extended work on the Air, especially when I‘m working between two or more applications. I seem to grab and move stuff faster with a mouse than I do with the trackpad. But again, like I said, the trackpad works great for the hand gestures—e.g. enlarging web pages and pulling up the the context menu on selected items.

Lol, damn, I just realized that this M305 Mouse doesn’t come with a 4th and 5th buttons. I was so taken with the price that I completely overlooked that. That means this mouse won’t be as useful with SteerMouse as my desktop 8-button Logitech mouse. Dang, I might have to take this one back.

Using a mouse is amazing. You can't beat the speed an accuracy. Especially when you have used a mouse for years and years. But, its crippled in osx. Lots of OSX users haven't had the experience of using a real mouse, with proper operating system support.

This has nothing to do with mouse being superior, you're just saying that what you have used for years and years is superior for you.

I myself have used a trackpad (Mac trackpad, not these supertiny PC trackpads) for years and years and they are not superior for me. The speed and accuracy is really lower when I use a mouse (even with USB Overdrive to remove the mouse acceleration). Also, it's really annoying to constantly move your hand between the keyboard and mouse, compared to when you use the trackpad and you don't have to move your hand at all.

Wow... just wow...

If you think that's annoying... well, not sure what to tell you, but I'm shocked.

i concur.

i have the magic mouse. it's a pos. it tracks too slow even in the fastest setting. the dragging sucks. good thing is, the air is the first laptop where i don't bring along a mouse. ultimately, the mouse has better control especially when you're dragging files, but the trackpad is good enough where i'm not compelled to carry around yet another accessory for a complete mobile experience.

The drag lock makes dragging files with trackpad better imo

I think it depends on what you’re doing on the computer. When I’m working with photo processing and iMovie productions, it’s easy to just click around and get things done with the mouse.

Whereas when I’m writing and surfing the web, the trackpad seems better. As for writing, though, I wish Apple would bring in more of the features used for typing in iOS. For instance, I would love to hit the space bar twice on the MBA and have a period come at the end of the sentence as it does in iOS devices. Same thing for auto or suggested spelling completion. Why hasn’t that been included in OS X system. These type of features would reduce how much we use the trackpad or mouse.

Your post does not make any sense. Of course less movements is preferred, escpecially when you do the movements several hours each day.

I use the MBA trackpad or a bluetooth Apple trackpad when plugged into an external monitor. Much prefer the trackpad over any mouse.

I could not agree with you more! I think that the trackpad is a very good interface to use. Since most people presumably buy their MBA for the portability, I just can't see reason to carry along any additional component unless it is substantially better (and I don't think there is anything that is substantially better - of course that is an opinion).

I say, get used to the trackpad since you will always have that with you, (even if you carry only the MBA with you). If you ever use a different input device you move backwards, becoming less proficient with what is ideal to use when you are on the go with minimal accessories.
