1. Make some phone calls and at least get the paperwork why warranty was denied. Sounds shady.
2. Call Corporate.
3. Before you tear into the machine take plenty of photos.
4. Go to http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html and plug in your serial, you will get all info on your computer.
5. 2006-2007-2008 may be the case however I would not chance it and only get the case model from what you have unless you would be migrating all the little cables as well.

The handles are gentle and tend to tear apart from rivets.

I was actually the seller. I was assured by the UPS Store in my area that I'd packed it fine but lost the damage claim (even though I bought insurance!). Sigh. It's pretty upsetting, but what I wasn't aware of is that by using the UPS Store I waived the right to handle damage claims myself. The UPS Store submitted a claim and it was denied; UPS corporate won't let me appeal it since I'm not the "primary shipper."

So why let an otherwise perfectly good Mac Pro go to waste? I figured I could fix it back up and make the best of the situation :)

Is the UPS Store a franchise or UPS themselves - sounds like a conflict of interest if you ask me..

I'd be going to your consumer rights or insurance ombudsman

I bought my 4,1 in December but shipping was definitely not an option for me. I only shopped ones I saw in Silicone Valley, L.A., and San Diego (areas I frequent). Most legit places were willing to let me pick up locally.

I, too, had a bad experience with UPS back in the day, trying to send a mid-tower PC to some relatives--it arrived pretty smashed up. They said it was my fault because I didn't use the original Dell shipping box.

I got my 3,1 used from a known Mac seller.
It was marked as "excellent". and it was.
By the time I was done with it few years later the case had a few light scratches (mainly from windex cleaning) but no dents or the like.

I sold it locally on CL.

I bought my 4,1 on ebay and one of my criteria was a clean case. It was very tough to find one with good quality photos. My unit came and at first I was WTF but at closeup inspeciton of lower res photos the top arm does stick out a bit over the side panel.

These cases are VERY prone to damage, even incidental as alluminium is soft.

Are the steps and tools required to move internals from a 2008 Mac Pro to a new case more or less the same as it would be with a 2006 Mac Pro?

Anyone knows if 4.1 and 5.1 have same case?
I read through the tread, but couldnt find any any answer on how to disassemble everything with cables and parts?

I have the same dilemma as OP and am about to buy a replacement case from a guy locally. 4,1 to 4,1 so no compatibility problems there. Can anyone provide a link with some detailed instructions on how to swap one Mac Pro case to another? It’s way too late for me to complain to the seller or FedEx now so I’m not interested in that solution to my problem. This seems to be quite a common problem with shipping these Mac Pros.

I guess the Apple technician’s guide contains the instructions I need, sorry to revive this thread. If there are better instructions out there I’d still appreciate them.

Apple Technician’s Guide was enough although there were a few gotcha’s.

All I can say is that you’ll need a screwdriver set with Phillips head, torx head, and hex head, some WD-40, the Apple service manual and some patience. Getting the CPU surround out is a pain in the butt, you gotta move the fans in a bit on both sides top and bottom and shimmy it out. This is where you’ll need the torx head to get the bottom screws out. Apple recommends positioning the Mac Pro vertically but these torx screws can be tough. Make sure to pay attention to the screw holes going to the backplane board because it’s easy to screw that up if you’re not paying attention. Getting the power supply out is straightforward but needs hex head. The rest are Phillips head you have to take the PCIe fan out and make sure you engage the lever when you put it back in. One more thing, the fan header cables are a pain to remove. The best way I found to remove them is to fit a flat head screwdriver in between the connector and plug on both sides and push hard on both sides at the same time. The service manual just says remove the fan header plug but it’s not that simple.
