When will people learn that it is GOOD competition that is good, otherwise bad competition simply confirms that Apple made all the right decisions with the 1st gen.

True, I don't see the Joo Joo inspiring a lot of innovation.

What little we saw of it looked very niche. However, it also looked really cool. I was excited about learning more about it and one day at least looking at one in a store ... with a strong chance I'd buy one depending on details that have not been possible to know so far.

I guess the cancellation indicates that there wasn't much to it beyond what we saw in the video, ie that it was a very niche and one-dimensional item. That's too bad.

I don't see how this is good for anybody. I especially think it's a shame for Microsoft, which really needs to show it can still innovate instead of just iterating.

Its sort of hard to match the iPad because it is SO user friendly. For a tablet you don't want a full on OS. You want something easy/enjoyable to use and quick to use. The UI needs to look good as well which Apple got spot on. The JooJoo has an okay UI I feel but nothing compared to the iPad. Any other tablet will have to make sure they produce a very nice UI to match the iPad.

*in my opinion*

Not sure if you saw the previous Courier video etc, but the OS and interface are not Windows ... perhaps the underlying technology is, but the UI is completely unique. It's actually more unique in concept than the iPad ... but apparently was not a fully fleshed out concept and/or was impossible to produce at real-world pricepoints.

Those Courier videos weren't even of a prototype... they were all CGI. The Courier was as close to reality as any device depicted on Star Trek.

Ok I'm an apple fan and all (based on my signature) and being an ipad 64gb wifi owner at the moment, I am at a loss why people on here are cheering the downfall of ipad rivals. HP and Microsoft and google need to step up and offer competent alternatives because Competition is good people. Your a fool if you think a monopoly and a one product solution is the best for consumers.

Jeez look at Android, yes pre-2.0 was crap but damn that OS is constantly being update to make it better at an extremely fast rate. That's good! It keeps apple competitive the same way the PS3 and 360 and Wii all compete for your dollars to offer wellpriced consoles (for the most part) with good games.

You obviously didn't read every post in this thread. double  atcha.

I'm just glad I'll not be reading any more naysayers' comment that "I'm waiting for the Courier."

That was indeed the raison d'etre for the vapor.

Now all they've got is a camera and a cardreader to wait for. And, when gen 2.0 arrives with those very features, they'll find some other shortcoming to postpone buying the APPLE device, in favor of some mythical rumored superior product.

Wow, that really sucks. Courier was the only other tablet that i was interested in, since it was the only other one not running a full desktop OS. SOme of the stuff, like the journal, was really interesting. I have both an iPhone and a Zune, and I could have seen myself getting a courier to go along with my iPhone. Microsoft can crank out some nice stuff (as long as it has nothing to do with Windows OS).

Feels bad man

It 'appeared' not to be running a full desktop OS. That's because it was running NO OS. It did not exist outside of the video frames.

So now you have a choice: buy the one that isn't running a desktop OS - Apple's iPad - or buy nothing. I wonder which you'll opt for.

Ha! Boy you can say that again. What a pile of rubbish, and to think so many people were riled up behind it. Just goes to show you what the power of hype can do.
Anyway, I really was not surprised to hear the fate of the Courier. I mean really, just watching the vids you can tell it wasnt going to happen. Especially since it looked rather neat it was obvious MS would have never followed through.

No need to be so abrasive. I bought an iPad 3G which I should have by 3 PM tomorrow. Just because I have a Zune does not mean i am a Microsoft fanboy.

And I know It wasn't more than a concept in progress, but still looked pretty neat as far as non-iPad tablets go

Did anyone really believe this would actually come to fruition?

Nope. The whole 'hinged book' form factor and a stylus?

Ugh, no thank you. Clumsy to use, especially holding it one hand while manipulating with the other.

Did anyone really believe this would actually come to fruition?

No, but I certainly was hoping it would. It had a lot of potential in my eyes and was definitely an alternative to the iPad (3G being delivered tomorrow!) that I quite likely would have bought. It was the one design I felt offered a proper option to the iPad compared to the myriad crap Android tablets circulating that will also never come out nor challenge Apple.

It kind of sucks we are actually 6-12 months out from anyone really releasing any kind of tablet that will sell well enough to make Apple work a little harder (maybe they can use the downtime to improve their server OS).

Quick question, was the Courier hype a Redmond planned attempt to counter the iPad announcement hoopla? Or was it elevated to that point by the Apple-hating crowd needing something to rally around as a device "better than the iPad"?

I know Microsoft has a corporate history of touting vaperware, but did any official MS Courier announcements (or leaks) coincide with the iPad debut?

TIA:)

While the more popular Courier videos were mockups (partly due to no such hardware existing), the idea itself was well known to be based on a combination of the Codex (dual screen) and InkSeine projects. (You can even download and use the latter on a tablet.)

Also: Engadget: The root of the Courier Project

Most interesting of all is that these two projects have been put into play in tandem, with InkSeine running on the Codex Project's dual-screen tablet. Even photos from Microsoft's Codex page show the two projects used to compile what looks like an artist's scrapbook for a project -- almost the exact example used in the Courier demo. - Engadget

Everyone in this thread should at least skim all three links above, in order to have a better idea of how much was real or not. Microsoft's Research division publishes some cool stuff; they're just not good at productizing it.
