Ok so I wonder if anyone else here has done this yet.
For the past many years I’ve kept iTunes on an external drive. Then I would back up the entire iTunes folder, once a month, to other external drives for safe keeping. I have a large library.
I upgraded to Catalina yesterday and fired up the Music app. Everything was there and perfect, including play counts, ratings, genre details, etc. However, I did not see the new database file for Music on the external. I thought that was strange. A few minutes later, I found it on my Mac’s Internal drive! Ok, odd. I moved the file to the primary external and then held Option and opened Music and pointed it to the moved location on my external (inside my existing iTunes folder on external). And again, everything was there and I visited Preferences and made sure that the files area was still set for the primary external. It was. Great!
Now here’s the question. In the past when I’ve copied the iTunes folder, I would double check things were in order by Option + Click iTunes, point it to the secondary external and open it. And everything was good. I could right click on a song, Get Info, go to file and see that it was indeed reading the media from the secondary drive. Ditto for the third and 4th externals.
Has anyone done this with Music yet? I’d like to know before I just make a backup. I’d like to know if once I make a backup to my secondary external drive, point Music to the second drive’s db file, right click on a song and get info - File if it’ll point to the media on the secondary drive or if it’ll point to the media on the primary.
I hope this makes sense. And hopefully someone has an answer. Thanks in advance!
