i agree, great thread! its hard to filter through all the apps to find the good ones. i'm surprised apple doesn't seem to showcase them more. i really want to support the quality apps so there's incentive to keep'em coming. here's my favorites and must haves (i have a lot but they're the best at what they're for IMHO):

free:
epocrates, DxSaurus 1$, eponyms (all must haves for med students)
yelp
aim
google (search, with voice)
iheart radio (limited stations but has a few key ones that aren't in wunder)
Stitcher (free streaming podcasts, well organized, updates have made it great)
wikipanion
dictionary (from dictionary.com, impressive, even has audio pronunciations!)
evernote (great for stockpiling any info you come across, syncs with online server)
facebook
pandora (of course)
remote
myLite (great flashlight)
easy relax, white noise (not sure if still free, good relaxing sounds)
iTV (very well put together tv guide with video clips..)
Air Hockey
Beer Pong
Knots (fun little game, like twister but with your fingers)
iPint (always fun to play with beer)
Shazam
PanoLab (easily make panoramas with camera, its great!)
WSJ (wall street journal, just good information, smooth interface)

Paid:
Labyrinth
10balls7cups (perfect arcade skeeball 1$ i think)
wurdle (great wordfinder game, always come back to it)
SmackTalk (simple but perfect, a guini pig repeats what you say, its actually really really fun to play with, kids especially like it)
NanoFighter (great little space shooter, cheap!)
Brushes (simple but nearly perfect drawing app, can also draw on your pics)
WunderRadio (well polished, hundreds or thousands? of radio stations world wide)
Marquee (streams messages across the screen)
iHandy Carpenter (the BEST level out there, used it to build some shelves, looks amazing)
iSteam (very well done steamy window effect if your into that sort of thing)
wobble (kinda silly/immature but tons of fun, you can make any part of the image wobble (including parts of the female anatomy) with adjustable sized circles)
TapTapDance (amazing if you like electronic dance music, great music, great visualizations!)
Zen Bound (not "fun" but very soothing and looks amazing)
Classics (really nice book reader, just has free books on there, the classics, if i actually read books anymore this would be the first book app i used)

iBird Plus
Skype
PortfolioLive
flickr sendr
CameraBag
AP Mobile
IM+

Twitterrific is the best one but it is $4.99. Twitterfon is free and Twitterena is .99. They are good, just not as colorful and dont make tweet noises...lol

ebay is cool too if you use it like i do. Craigsphone is free too, which is Craigslist.

You can turn the tweet noise off. That got really annoying.

not to be too critical but to those of us new to the iPhone and apps stuff, a long list of programs isn't as helpful as it could be. it is very time consuming to google each one.

to those of you who put a description of the programs--thanks!

So, you want people to put the time and effort to detail each one but don't want to do it yourself? Don't google, open itunes and type in (or copy and paste) names and see for yourself.

[app]Now Playing[/app] is a must!

I agree with Shazam and Grocery IQ. I use the latter much more than I thought I would.
Thanks Ntombi!

You know, when I first got my iPhone, a movie type of app was THE first app I went out and searched for.

For some reason, I settled on buying One Tap movies.

It is pretty good.

But Now Playing is better, and with the Netflix integration, WOW, it is a no brainer.

So thanks for the tip!

A quick note, none of these are free, but they are all among the best apps I use. They might be of interest to newbies.

Groups - Organizes contacts into groups, looks great and is easy to use. Adding or deleting multiple contacts is annoying with this program though, the headers keep hiding some contact's names.

Picture Safe - Locks up pics. I can also create new albums, and organize the pics within the album.

Beejive - Def the best IM app out there.

MyVideos - Download favorite YouTube vids. The YouTube quality is higher from this app, it supports folders, and a lock for 'other stuff'.

Momo - Great note taking app. Tags and Full Search make finding notes easy. I prefer the lock upon opening app as opposed to other apps systems.

Stanza - My favorite ebook reader.

Pocket Informant - Indispensible. Integrated calendar and todos, syncs to Gcal and Toodledo, shows events and tasks for a day all within one view. The Timebars are awesome. I use this in conjuction with the builtin calendar, syncing both apps to the Gcals I use. Ugly icon! A new icon is coming in an update, a great-looking icon it is.

PocketMoney - Great app for tracking accounts, budgets, and even income sources. The google graph snips off labels though.

Instapaper - Read articles offline.

iSaveWeb - Download entire webpages for offline viewing.

AlarmTunes - Inexpensive alarm app that wakes you up to your own music.

BodyBook - Workout log without the exercise how to database that I don't need. Great progress graphs.

Japanese - Sometimes outdated, but the great kanji lookup and kanji animations are useful.

Wisdom - The best Japanese-English dictionary out now.

Oxford Deluxe - Best Dictionary-Thesaurus app, it's been indispensible for when I prepare to teach an advanced ESL class.

JotNot - Take a pic of a paper, optimize it, and save it. Better than carrying around pieces of paper. Not perfect, perhaps the 3GS camera will take clearer pics more often.

ReaddleDocs - Download docs from the web or emails.

Uniwar - Awesome turn-based strategy war game.

Galcon - Fast paced online strategy game, also awesome. Sucks the battery life though.

Thanks to all that have listed apps they use, this has worsened my app addiction :D Right now it shows 101 apps.
