...and to answer your question, yes, I went with the Classic because of capacity. What I really wanted is the same thing a lot of people on this board wanted...the Touch with a high-capacity hard drive. Guess we'll all just have to wait it out.

Mmmmmm... Sexy Sexy:D

Im not sure jumping on wifi quickly would ever loose its novelty. I agree, though. I kind of wish Apple had made an HDD ipod touch, at least for the first generation. It would have been a killer product, but a lot of additional engineering cost for a product that would eventually get phased out by flash in less than a year.

Second on capacity. The iPod Touch is, if I'm converting correctly, 0.31 inches thick. I'd have to think that taking it out to a half-inch would allow an HDD of significantly more capacity without driving weight or width.

As much as I need a new iPod -- my 20 gb is maxed out -- and as much as I want the Touch, I'll be going with the Classic. Not that Apple minds: Either way, I'm spending $$$, right?

Laggy?

MattG,

As others are, I'm torn betwen the 16GB Touch and the higher capacity Classic (my 30GB 5G maxed out a couple of months ago ... so this refresh was perfect timing but, alas, I didn't get the HD-based Touch I was hoping for).

My question for you is pretty simple. The one thing that is (potentially) holding me back from purchasing the Classic is that I've heard (and read in multiple reviews) that the new UI is ridiculously laggy. 99% of the reviews that I have read temper their enthusiasm about the added features because menus take longer to load (due to thumbnail photos) and Coverflow becomes almost unusable (especially when trying to surf through album covers while a track is already playing). Have you noticed major lag? Skipping or delays in tracks?

I'd appreciate help on this ... I'm planning on buying online, and I'd like to have some more info on this angle before I do.

Thanks!

/e.

So odd to see an iPod clad in matte black... almost as if it's going through an akward teenage goth phase. I like it, but it seems less warm and friendly than the previous cases.

When I was in the store playing with the classics, any music playing would skip when I put them on cover flow and flipped quickly through the albums. Anyone of the new owners having this problem?

apart from having issues with it crashing when i try and put everything i own on the ipod, when it isn't crashing the interface isn't too laggy at all.

Some menu's take a couple of seconds to come up (playlists is particularly slow) but coverflow works fast enough. As i've seen others say, cover flow is useless with a large library anyway... i haven't scrolled past 'B's yet without getting a sore thumb!

in my experience with my iPod, when it's working, it works a dream. I expect some lag accessing some menus, but then most of the time i'm just listening to music! (btw playing music while accessing menus makes no difference)

There are a couple places where it's a little laggy, usually in places where it's trying to pull up cover art.

On a positive note, it seems to be faster in my car. That is to say, my Kenwood iPod adapter -- skipping between playlists/songs seems to go much faster than it did before (sometimes there'd be a 10 second pause in between).

Yeah, i received my 80GB yesterday and the UI is definitely laggy. I hope they release a firmware update soon.

Could you explain what you mean by laggy? I held off on upgrading to an iPod photo, 5G, and 5.5G because I felt the UI was laggy. Not the actual time it took to load the menus, but the lag that was encountered when you tried to scrub through a song or scroll through the menus really fast. Is that lag still present, or did they finally fix that?

Note:I don't care about loading times for menus, as long as I can use the friggin menu once it loads!

What do you guys think, would I like it?

I have a 6G iPod 80GB and I am here to tell you that the UI is definetly laggy. Not only that, but plugging it into iTunes and initiating a sync stalls your whole system and gives a you a few beachballs until its done. I am running on a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of RAM it really should not be this slow.

Firmware updates for the classic are definetly needed, a software upgrade for iTunes is needed too.

Them photos are better than Apple's PR shots! I thought the 6G was ugly, now I think it's minutely better :D but its something I'm willing to sacrifice for 160gb and a new UI. In due time. Soon as I hear the UI isn't as laggy I'll have to look into getting one.

Matt, would you mind telling us about the now playing screen? what does it display on every click on the center button of the click wheel? and does it still display lyrics to songs? post some pics if you can please... thanks a lot matt!:)
