I've had a number of Apple products over the years, but this is my first Mac. My previous PC was was an intel core2duo, and I bought it new in 2005. My problem is that from day one, my mac mini has been WAY slower than my ancient PC was? My PC had 2gb of RAM and a budget HDD, so it wasn't that my old system was fast. I am literally only using my mac mini to surf the web and download the odd movie, tv show, etc...

When I try to open any program or browser, the whole thing freezes for as long as a minute. It makes no sense that it is so slow. Same goes for any task. If I open Finder, and click and drag a tiny file to the desktop for example, it takes about five seconds before the file even acknowledges that I have selected it and am moving it. Any ideas? I'm practically pulling my hair out.

Bold, see it now.

Whatever, I leave it here.

Edit, Damn, I see it now but he said 2gm.

Yeah, 2gb RAM for sure. Should be more than enough for basic functions. I mean, my old PC did fine with that much and I was running way more intensive programs.

Startup is 25 seconds from pressing the button to login. After login, it's only a few seconds followed by a few more of waiting for everything else to catch up.

So it is OK now, I edited my last post before this, I searched for 2 GB, of course it skipped the 2gm in one of your posts.

2 GB is not enough. Your old PC didn't run Mountain Lion.

First, my apologies, crap I didn't see that one.

Now, I have to agree with you, 2 GB is just not enough for Mountain Lion, the OP can easily keep an eye on his pageouts, if it is more than a GB I would definitely suggest to buy a bit more.

No problem. You're not alone. Virtually everyone missed it. Probably because it is not common seeing someone trying to use Mountain Lion with 2 GB of RAM.

If your computer runs fine after booting up, but starts to slow down when you've opened multiple applications and you're doing a lot at the same time, you might want to add some memory. You can easily do this yourself.

Sometimes you don't have to reboot to free up memory. Relaunching web browsers like Safari or Firefox and other applications that have been open for a long time can help too.

You can examine your machines memory usage in Activity Monitor.

You're paging out. 2gb of ram is insufficient. Most people upgrade to 8 because its cheap and resolves your issue. This would be clear if you opened activity monitor.

This is a stunningly common complaint about that model. You see people them on craigslist for 300 because they don't know that 2gb of ram is the issue, how cheap it is to fix and how easy it can be upgraded. When buying one on craigslist, if you suspect they think they're selling you a defective mini or a crap machine, have the owner show you it running a handful of programs.

They either dont want to show you it running more than 1 thing or the bottom falls out on their asking price because they think they've been caught trying to pull a fast one on you.

However, the same reason people are selling so cheap is the same reason we see shocked and upset new owners like this guy.

They have no idea that 2gb of ram is insufficient for this machine.
