Regarding Apple support of the raw files:

I've done some googling came up with this info, for what it's worth. The 5D Mark II was announced in mid-September of 2008. It started shipping in late November. Apple came out with raw support for it in late December. So: three months after the announcement and one month after it was available in stores.

I'm going to guess that Apple will have raw support for the 7D by this time next month.

That seems about right. I remember for a few months before Aperture 2 came out Apple didn't update the support for new cameras, which was confusing at the time but all became clear when Ap2 was released with the new rendering engine (or whatever it was called!) All the recently released cameras were then supported and since then new cameras have been supported pretty soon after launch.

Ahh, seems like the in-camera processing of JPGs looks pretty good! But then again, you really don't know if there's any kind of noise reduction added...Because it seems like it does, even if you have it set to off on the camera. :p This is why I'm going to wait until I do my own tests...When I get my camera tomorrow! Testing with RAW is going to be a better test anyway. Hopefully the high ISO noise is nearly comparable to the 5DII. Hopefully the 7D doesn't let me down! I have a feeling that I'm going to love the 5DII + 7D combo. ;)

I haven't had the pleasure of using a 5dmkII, but from what I understand, the 7D probably isn't as good. I'd say at the edge of useable at 3200, 6400 in a pinch, 12,800 if you REALLY have to.

I'm fine with noise reduction applied in camera, so long as it's not affecting detail - and at 18mp, even if it is, it probably would never show in images viewed at normal size anyway. I do a majority of my shooting in JPEG.

Surely you meant 3.3MB per minute of 720p?

Nope, manual says 330 MB per minute on 720p. This is the real deal 720p, 60 fps.

What movie files have you seen in 720P that are 3.3 MB per minute? Trailers from the apple site are typically 50 MB per minute, but they're at 24 fps, and are wider screen (so their vertical resolution is normally something less than 720, like 544 or something depending on the aspect ratio).

So, I just got my 7D today! I have to say, WOW. I'm very impressed with this camera. The ISO performance is AMAZING for a crop camera, and definitely the best in its class. With 18MP, it's even more amazing. I thought image quality and ISO performance was going to suffer severely, but boy did Canon prove me wrong! It's just a tad worse than the 5D Mark II, according to my own tests. But damn, after seeing the RAW files, I'm now a believer! :D

It's definitely better than the 50D and the t1i in ISO performance! I always saw noise at 100, 200, and 400 in those cameras. The 7D however, is much better! Almost identical to the 5DII. And the viewfinder is awesome. Video is amazing, and for some reason, the 720p 60fps mode doesn't have any jello effect from what I've seen! I'll do some more testing to see if this is indeed the case!

I'm loving this combo now! 5DII + 7D = Best of both worlds! I like the 8fps burst as well! Yay! Whoever is thinking about getting it, just get it. You won't be disappointed. ;)

Got mine at BH. Might wanna try to place an order there. Right now it's on "Accepting Orders" status, which is when I placed mine before it went to "Backorder". It looks like this'll be a lot more widespread than even the 5DII, since APS-C sensors are cheaper and faster to produce. Hopefully it won't be sold out like the 5DII. About a year after the 5DII's been out, it's still sold out at most retailers!

Did some more test shots throughout the week, and I'm very impressed. There's simply no competition between the 50D/500D and the 7D. Definitely deserves the single digit designation of the EOS series. The autofocus system is simply awesome.

Took my 7D to the Zoo (click thorugh to Flickr to access larger images):

EF 70-200 f/4.0 L + 1.4x TCII, 280mm, f/5.6, 1/50s, iso800.

EF 70-200 f/4.0 L + 1.4x TCII, 235mm, f/5.6, 1/160s, iso800.

EF 70-200 f/4.0 L + 1.4x TCII, 158mm, f/5.6, 1/6s, iso6400.

EF 70-200 f/4.0 L + 1.4x TCII, 189mm, f/5.6, 1/100s, iso800.

This is the look a cheetah gives you when it wakes up to a big lens pointed at it. Oh, and check out his cute little heart-shaped nose:

I know me too! But it would probably eat my face off. Just the other day while commuting home from work, I almost stepped on a dog's tail. It wasn't just another dog though, it was a NYPD German Shepherd, pure breed too. Massive dog as well, I'm 5'8 and the dog was up to my stomach just sitting with is rather tall for a dog. It turned and looked at me just before I stepped down and I was like "OH SH** ITS A DOG" and it just stared at me like "I dare you go ahead and step on my tail and I will rip your jugular out of your throat"

One thing I don't get, why did the officer need a M4 and A DAMN DOG?! It's like overkill. No one is making it that far when you've got an M4 handy.

No, no, he's not that kind of cheetah; I'm sure of it. ;)

By the way, mrkgoo, you might want to do something to bring his eyes out a bit more; they're a bit lost in the shadows.

If he was a NYPD dog, he was probably extremely well-trained, only to rip out jugulars when asked to. :p

Phrasikleia: Thanks for the comments. I would give it a go, but I'm not sure how I can achieve selective enhancement with my current tool box (iPhoto :/). I really should invest in some better software to post process (which I basically do none of at the moment ). I'm going to wait for an Aperture 3.0 or something, and maybe when I get a larger hard drive, I can seriously give RAW a better go.

Hopefully people won't mind if I indulge in my own thread.

So another trip around with my 7D, this time armed with my 60mm Macro. OMG! One thing I already said was that the 7D resolution is like making a macro out of some other lenses. When combined with a proper macro ... I was taking things I didn't know I could. Crop-ability is so good with 18mp.

Something else I learned about Macro (for moving things like webs in the wind): FPS helps! Set to burst, then start shooting and lean through the DOF. One of them is sure to be dead on!

Again, I'm breaking my rule of posting less shots for more impact.

I actually have a video of this spider sensing something fly into the web, and then plucking webs to provoke it to reveal its location. It then zipped over and ate it. Pretty shakey footage, though. Manual focus tracking for video is hard.

Very nice shots, mrkgoo, but you're not making me feel any better about having to sell my beloved 60mm macro. :( (I bought the new 100mm IS macro and promised I would sell the 60mm to make up for it.)

I got say i have both a 40d and 50d and the noise floor of the 7d is just amazing. at 800 there appears to be very little noise if any at all. The 1600 seems to have the noise level i see at 400 on my 40d and 350 or so on my 50d. I am amazed. I am still not sure it is enough thought 3200 performance of the nikons are just as good as the 1600.

nice pics! i was able to find one here in LA Saturday and drove across town to get it. unfortunately i didn't even have a chance to use it. it sits, fully charged at home, waiting. i'll probably sell the kit lens that came with it and pick up a sigma 30mm and the canon 85 1.8. i'll be sure to post some pics when i get a chance.
