Makes sense, it's the old model, you're going to find deals. I sold my 256GB 10.5, Smart Cover, and Smart Keyboard for $700. Easy upgrade decision for me.

I try to be 1-2yrs behind with most of my tech these days. You save a ton of money, you avoid most of the early adopter bugs, it's greener. Also, I find bargain hunting to be sort of fun.

Not just Apple stuff either. Gaming: I am just now thinking about getting an Xbox One, been playing the Xbox 360 since the One launched - picked that up for $200 for the E model and games are $5-$10 on ebay or amazon in good condition. Some of the earlier Xbox One games are getting down there now too. HT receiver: no need to get a brand new one when refurbs or one year used can be had for much less. Laptops: same.

The only tech I bought recently brand new was a TV... nearly everything else I get used/refurbished.

I'm doing the exact same thing as you. I can't justify the retail price for new Apple products, that are just replacing existing Apple products. A few months ago I upgraded my iPad mini to the 9.7" iPad Pro for super cheap, found a great deal on the Pro that was almost a wash when I sold my mini. This will keep me going for a while, I've really enjoyed the ASK and pencil. My iPhone 6s still works perfect. When it dies, I'll at most upgrade to the iPhone X, because it will be reasonable by then, hopefully in the $300-$400 range.

All tech products have a steep initial drop off curve and level out after a couple years. I try to wait for the leveling out so that when I go to resell it again, I don't lose much.

I'm also amazed at what offers people will take for "old" tech equipment. I'll usually offer half to 2/3rd of their asking price and many will agree. You have to be in a position to walk away if you don't get the price you want.

iPad resale value has always been horrible. I don’t even count it in my calculations of what a new model will cost me.
Add to that:

- 32% increase in the new IPP prices

- Import fees very harsh (having to lie to customs about the real price of items, and risk getting caught. Also if the item is lost during shipping from U.S. > elsewhere you only get insurance over what you informed in the customs declaration forms)

- Local economy in bad shape, so ridiculous exchange rates

It's impossible to keep buying from Apple.

Or at least you have to wait 3-4 years to justify a new investiment, that's when your current device must be really outdated.

I’ve been watching prices for the past couple of weeks and this thread encouraged me to bite the bullet. Just picked up a 256GB, LTE with Smart Keyboard, pencil and silicone sleeve for $601.

Can't go wrong. I never had any performance issues with the 10.5 and I use mine daily.

This exact problem is what made me struggle with what to do for my kids for xmas ... I could have bought one of them a new iPad 128gb LTE for $560 or get him a 10.5 used in mint condition, with keyboard, pencil, leather cover, 256GB LTE for $580. No brainer ... then I decided not to sell my 10.5 and upgrade my other son ... so while I didn't get to pay into my new 11" ... I will have 2 older iPads I could sell while still upgrading the kids to 10.5 pros ... almost not worth buying their cheaper iPad ... glad I could maximize their iPad longevity though

Wow. I must be unlucky. I'm selling a very young 10.5 with 512, AppleCare+ and a slew of accessories (covers, keyboards, chargers for the pencil, the pencil itself, etc.). No bites of substance. A lot of people offering way less than it's worth. I think I mentally need to understand I'm gonna have to drop the price on that huge to get a hit.

How can you be sure its not iCloud locked though, when buying off eBay?

After having my jaws hit the floor after seeing the new iPad pricing structure

Same. Had my pennies saved to get an Apple Watch and a new iPad. The iPad price has gone up so much it would eat the entire amount with nothing left over for the watch. These new prices are .... something else.

That's why you need to buy used or get new when on sale. iPads always go on sale for $100-200 off if you wait a little. I got my 10.5 new from Best Buy when it was on sale for $175 off plus another $25 cashback from credit card. When I check Best Buy for trade in they’re offering $325 so only lost ~$125 or so without tax. Not bad for 1 year device.

The problem with the resale, is the 10.5 iPad really looks like all the other iPads on the market, and the new iPad Pros for 2018 are the first that actually adopt somewhat of a new design and Face ID. So the consumer generally sees the same thing with the 10.5 iPad as they do with all the others with the home button, even though it does have reduced bezels.

And in general, iPads, like the Apple Watches, don’t have a very strong resale value, even though they are very popular in the used market.

Yea I think I got kind of lucky, but I also sold mine 2 weeks before the keynote knowing that prices were going to drop significantly.

eBay protects the buyer if you get a product that doesn't work or is falsely advertised. I also buy from sellers who have reputable feedback and the listing confirmed it was restored to factory settings.

What platform are you using to sell it?

Timing is everything for resale. Folks on this forum are in 1% of America that actually care about or know about when an Apple Product Introduction Event is happening.

Selling right before the event has always historically allowed me to sell at a higher price. After the event (maybe 2-3 days after), I would guess about a 10% - 20% decrease in selling price on average.

You executed the resale perfectly. It’s always a rough couple weeks until we get our new products but its well worth it.

Yea, that was my thinking too. I have done it this way for a few years and it has always worked out well. I did have to slum it with a Microsoft Surface for a couple weeks so that was painful, but worth it in the end.

I bought a refurbished 10.5 iPad Pro from Apple the day after the recent keynote. Saved $217 over an 11" iPad Pro. I don't need an extra .5" of screen or Face ID.

So I finally got my auction winnings delivered and oh boy, it is even better than mint condition. The original owner saved all of the pamphlets that came with each of the Apple products and even re-wrapped the iPad and Apple Pencil in the original plastic wrap.
