The same thing happened to my iMac G4, but much worse. About 1/3 of the screen consists of dead pixels, and every time I boot it up (out of curiosity) I see it's spreading. It's a pity, now I have a G5, I was going to use it to watch DVD's in the bedroom, now it's not much use apart perhaps from a media server.

Anyone know anyone selling inexpensive iMac G4 parts?

I called Apple, the guy said he can't do anything for it...(I figured). he said he doesn't have the exact amount for a new screen but he said it could reach $1200! I mind as well buy a new Intel Mac. So Right now I'm going to look on ebay for a screen. I doubt anything will be done with the insurance. is it hard to replace the screen yourself?

You're right - you'd probably be better off buying a new computer... A buddy of mine cracked the screen on his powerbook and the repairs costs him somewhere around $1250.

Is the computer still fully functional (minus the screen of course)? If so have you considered the possibility of just getting a new monitor, setting it up as a dual monitor and using it instead. You're old screen could be a great place to hang a cork board - or as a reminder not to drop your computer... genius ... :p

Yea, i thought of that, but its stupid... I will just have to wait for someone to sell a 17" screen on Ebay. Right now no one is!!!!

buy a new one with cash.

remove the NEW lcd and switch it with your "broken" one.

reseal the new iMac box.

return for cash.

bam.

ps: not for the goody goodies on MR forums that abound.

Perhaps I'm a goody goody... but this is plain wrong.

Second, you're gonna end up with two broken iMacs. Plus, Apple would tell you to get bent.

you tell me how this doesnt work?

there is no matching serial # on the LCD to the specific iMac it came from. and even if there was, paying with cash makes you untraceable.

If you have any hardware savvy you can switch the LCD panels of two identical iMacs.

Apple would tell you nothing because you are returning a perfectly fine, new, just bought iMac.

yes, you are too sweet for your own good.

Would it bother you if it was an XBOX bought from Microsoft?

Yes it would.

Apple isn't stupid... They'd realize that you damaged the machine. Even if they believed you... you're probably gonna have problems returning it. You don't return a damaged iMac and decide at the same time you changed your mind.

"Hi, I just bought this iMac. I opened the box and found the screen is damaged. It looks like someone drop kicked it. Yes, that is strange that the box shows no sign of damage. Well, actually I don't want to exchange it for a new one. I've changed my mind, and would like my money back."

Any point past the second sentence will probably get you thrown out of the Apple store.

Hi,

I think your suggestion of swapping lcd's is ridiculous. If you think that apple won't be able to tell that it was switched, you don't really have a clue. That's an awful gamble to take, and you will probably end up with 2 machines that you can't return. Even worse, if you don't know what you are doing, you'll end up with 2 broken machines.

If you are handy enought to switch lcd's, it may be worthwhile for you to check on ebay for just the lcd, so that you can switch that out. Otherwise good luck with insurance.

I used to work at Target, and this does happen/work a lot (actually, a lot of people wouldn't even return a similar item, but rather a brick in a digital camera box...the average girl at the returns desk isn't that bright). But the problem would be that when something as expensive as an imac is sold, the retailer almost always records the serial number. Plus, it's (just a little) illegal/immoral.

Um yeah, I'm sure some people would. I know if I bought an expensive product and it was DOA, I might just return it and not consider purchasing from that manufacturer anymore.

You guys are giving him false hopes in regards to home insurance fixing this. When I still lived with my parents we had a power surge, and the ONLY reason my computers were covered is because they had added a rider on their insurance specifically insuring my desktop and laptop... Even then the deductible was so high that I only ended up getting a couple hundred bucks out of the deal. Electronics aren't generally included in your average homeowner's policy... And even then, being a moron probably isn't covered.

Looks like the lesson learned here is don't be an idiot around things that you can't afford to replace.
That is 100% correct. I had home insurance and it wasn't until I had a very casual conversation with my hottie agent that he informed me that my computers and cameras weren't covered without a specific rider that listed them all. Not to mention, I had to pay extra for that. However $10 extra a month or whatever it is was well worth it to me.

If it is not cracked nor have any external damage then blowing your no claim bonus for your home insurance policy over something as trivial as a Mac is absolutely stupid

I'd despatch it to Apple's service centre for shoddy worksmanship! :p
