Tobacco, the tar and nicotine, can help dust and soot from cling to parts. Dust finds its way everywhere, electronics act like dust magnet. Before disk drives were sealed in air tight chambers dust and fine particulate matter sub-micron were 40-50 years ago a threat to drives. Air filtering systems were employed to scrub and pull "dust" out of the air. To help prevent a head-crash.

Blocking air, choking, and reducing the ability to efficiently cool chips or create a warm blanket on the surface of chips - there are air blowers and vacuums that are designed to be safely used around electronics. Just saw a thread about older iMac models where dust was getting behind the screen.

Non of which would lead to slowing down, unless the system was throttling to keep heat temps in check.

I looked at these sites, they show the danger is real.
I guess I need to get my iMac to get checked for this.

Btw, I also vaped (electronic cigarette) a lot in the same room as my iMac.

Alot of the times when I get the loading rainbow circle that shows up when the Mac is loading, it often happens when I perform a search on the Mac itself. When you go to file, and then 'find.' Is this normal? Does it happen to others? Something is telling me at the beginning when I first got the Imac, this didn't happen.

ok then! I'll be interested to hear when you get your iMac checked, to see how much evidence there is inside the machine, from smoking.

Dust (in general, not specifically due to smoking) inside iMacs has been discussed here:

Corrupt spotlight index / database more likely. Rebuild Spotlight.

The G4 MDD was last sold by Apple late 2002, early 2003 (ref'd). And different architecture. The IBM PM G5 was a huge problem with impacted dust as well as 50% failure of liquid cooling system.

Re your posting in #48 above:

Read speeds of 2550 are about as good as it gets.
Writes of 755 aren't the absolute fastest, but aren't bad and shouldn't impact things too much.

I don't see why you need to take it for service.
Again, the reported speeds are fine.

Your imac much better then me.

1. Changing to external ssd wouldnt much better
2. Stop using weird malware software and install ccleaner and remove all startup app.It will reduce a lot of unnessary ram usage .

Need to knw what is you consider as slow ?

1. a wheel each time open an apps?
2. slow startup boot ?
3. my render vid 4k is slow?
4. Used to open multi apps like word , fcp web and twitch or other ?

since allready 3 year , please to go any shop to clean inside the mac and ask them to put or whatever thermal paste to the cpu.same time if possible upgrade the ram to 16 gb or should be 32 gb in your version imac.

It is slow and the colourful circle appears when I am making a search of the iMac in file, find, at the top left of the screen. other times it is slow when I am opening a file, a very simple file, like TextEdit. When you talk about cleaning inside the Mac, do you mean a service? Or are you referring to cleaning the iMac because of possible smoke damage? What is thermal paste used for? I intend on upgrading to 32 ram. Thanks alot.

oh ok understand.

1.An upgrade to ssd would help a lot . For me , i'm using locate in terminal instead of the search .
*sometimes if you have anti virus software , malware on will slown down upon searching cause it will check either the file have virus or not. Try to disabled it and search .

2. Yes service your imac .Maybe a bit tiny smoke but mostly on dust.
3. Thermal paste is something link heatsink to proc and its usage to reduce heat.

Spotlight is the card catalogue. When it is corrupt it not working you can't find any of the books in the library.

Ok yeah, I have the free version of Malwarebytes. I will look into a ssd upgrade when I go the shop. I sincerely hope there is no problem with smoke or dust because of my smoking and vaping in the same room as my iMac. of course, that has ceased.
