Hey all.

My 1 month old 24" alu iMac is turning white.
It looks very very strange and can only be seen whem the computer is off (when the screen is black). It's coming from the upper left corner of the screen, and go in about 15 cm, the shape of it is somewhat simular to the leopard standard screensaver - you now the light beams going up in the mittle of the screen. it looks milky-white, and seams to be on the inside of the outer layer of glass...

Any idea what this might be???

Thanks in advance.:)

EDIT: SEE PICTURES IN BELOW POST

Her is a picture, its not the white dots im talking about, thats just dust on my camera lens, its the white lines going down from the corner.

I've upladed a darker image to, on wich its more clear, what i am talking about.

Onsite only works if...

well, couldnt i just call applecare, and they would pick it up?

Im still very curioous if any of you guys know what this might be, or even had the same thig happen to you?

Applecare onsite only works if you live within a half hour of a repair center. It makes onsite service kinda not worth it...:(

I've never seen that on my own iMac. It looks almost like it could be condensation. Is it particularly humid where you are? Does it change shape or size is it constant?

At any rate I agree with the others in this thread that no matter what it is you should be contacting Apple to send it in for service. It's easy enough to pop the glass panel using suction cups but I wouldn't recommend it. It's even easier still to get dust between the panel and the LCD when you put it back. ;)

Its constant.. And no, i live in Copenhagen, Denmark, where it may be rainy and cold outside, but not humid at all. I will call applecare to see what they say.

So i called applecare, and they have contacted their Danish service provider to schedule an onsite repair. They will contact me after easter with details...
Anyway, the guys at apple did provide very very good service i must say - thumbs up for that... But... The question remains: What is this? Apple says that they have never seen this before. So... Anyone?

Never seen that as well. Bring it into the local Apple Store for the genius to look at. Always go up the chain to the manager if the genius can't give you a definitive answer. Last resort would be to go call AppleCare and even writing to corporate to see what can be done. You're spending thousands on an Apple product and you need to be satisfied with your purchase.

That could be smoke inside the screen. Do you have a fireplace near the computer? Do you smoke? Do your friends smoke?

I smoke a lot in front of the imac and that happened to me 2 or 3 times. If it is smoke it can be in the glass panel (in the inside) or even in the tft panel. Just remove the glass to see what's that.
If it is caused by smoke, just clean it.

Well, its fixated, so i seriously doubt that it is smoke, eventough I do smoke.
I dont think i would be comfortable to remove the glas by myself, but thanks for your reply.

Looks like someone (housekeeper, spouse etc.) might have used a
glass cleaner with ammonia in it to clean the screen. That will over
time discolor it.

eventough I do smoke.

So, I can say for sure that's smoke :)

Don't be afraid of removing the glass, it's pretty easy and safe. Get used to it, because it will happen again if you keep smoking.I had to clean mine 3 or 4 times now.
And beware of the smoke in the tft corners; they will get yellow and that it's not easy to clean.
Cheers

Well, is it just me, or dos it sound very very strange that you cant smoke in front of the computer???, still, its just one month old - souldnt happen so fast IMO.

Believe it or not after 3 weeks I had to open mine and clean it.
A normal monitor gets yellow on the edges. In a mac monitor it get's white inside the glass and after that the tft corners will get yellow as any other tft (but this will take a lot longer)

I wouldn't let a person who smokes near my computer just because of what it does to things. It doesn't surprise me that this happens from smoking near the iMac.

good luck on cleaning it or getting applecare to.

Smoking is bad for computers. The nicotine gets all over the outside as well as the insides of the computer. What does to your walls in your house, it does to the computer as well.

I used to smoke back in the 90s and had a one of those beige colored computers. After about a year, it was stained yellow on the monitor casing and CPU.

Just an FYI...If it's raining outside, then there's 100% humidity. Unless you have air conditioning, then it's probably humid where you are. It can be cold and still be humid, that's for sure.

Hi mate i think thats condenstation

I had it the same, leave your mac on for a couple of days, dont let it sleep as it'll get cool

the glass infront of the screen can't be vaccum sealed as it will bugger the tft screen behind it, so its likely a little condensation can get in..

make your room warm, leave it on for a couple of days im sure it'll get rid of it.

mine has been fine ever since - and happened like you said (well it was off for about 2 weeks over xmas while i was away.. i had it for a week before that)

cheers :)

p.s its blatently not smoke :D

Hi Guys, and thanks for all your replies.
The Apple Tech is comming tomorrow morning to have a look at it. He says its probably just some sort of dirt or condensation. He have seen this problem before, and is pretty shure he can fix it on-site. Maybe he will have to clean it 6 times he says, but ashures me, that my "baby" is going to be fine. :)

All the best, and keep "Mac-ing"

Problem solved

So, the tech was here, and got rid off it for me. it took like to seeconds two get the screan of and clean it... THEN it took about two HOURS to put it back on, since there kept getting dust in between the glass and he LCD... OMG, it's sooo difficult. Anyway its back to beatiful,.. love this machine.

Thanks for all your replies.
