I just noticed my screen is starting to do the same thing! It is a 20" Aluminum iMac, bought it back in November. I do not smoke anywhere near my computer, I live in WI so it has been cold and dry, and I also have electric heat which keeps the air super dry. Time to get a hold of Apple, it is very nice living only 15 minutes from TWO Apple stores, lol.

Here is a picture of my problem, I turned it towards my window so it would show up on camera. My iMac is never hit by direct sunlight.

I've never seen that on my own iMac. It looks almost like it could be condensation. Is it particularly humid where you are? Does it change shape or size is it constant?

At any rate I agree with the others in this thread that no matter what it is you should be contacting Apple to send it in for service. It's easy enough to pop the glass panel using suction cups but I wouldn't recommend it. It's even easier still to get dust between the panel and the LCD when you put it back. ;)

mhmm, yeah, oh yeah, keep talking, you know you want to, your talking about me i bet;)

lol, im not opening my imac again.

Hey all.

My 1 month old 24" alu iMac is turning white.
It looks very very strange and can only be seen whem the computer is off (when the screen is black). It's coming from the upper left corner of the screen, and go in about 15 cm, the shape of it is somewhat simular to the leopard standard screensaver - you now the light beams going up in the mittle of the screen. it looks milky-white, and seams to be on the inside of the outer layer of glass...

Any idea what this might be???

Thanks in advance.:)

EDIT: SEE PICTURES IN BELOW POST

I have had my Imac for about 4 month now and I have just had the same problem. I went to the Mac store so they could fix it but they had never seen this phenomenon before. It turned out to be smoke and dust from cigarettes and kitchen smoke because of the ventilation system in the computer... They just cleaned the glass inside and now it looks like new again. I have heard that Apple is now famylier with the problem but they can't do anything with the problem.

Hope I have been usefull...

Hello. I am glad I found this thread because I have the EXACT same dirt/smoke under the glass!! It seriously looks exactly like the topic starters iMac. Exactly the same shape and same color!! (spooky) When the iMac is on, I notice the dirt looks yellowish. When the iMac is off, the dirt looks more white/gray. At the right side I have the same type of color only the dirt is a broad straight vertical line. There are also little yellow spots across the entire screen when the screen is on. It feels like the warmer spots on the screen are also the dirty ones.
I do smoke a lot in front of my Mac. :p

If I get the screen to be cleaned up at the apple store, will i have to pay for that? My mac is about 5 months old.

Thanks and im really happy this is just some dirt/smoke! I need to quit smoking now lol

Applecare onsite only works if you live within a half hour of a repair center. It makes onsite service kinda not worth it...:(

50 miles or 80 kilometers... even if it takes them 5 hours to get there ;)

Smoking is bad for computers. The nicotine gets all over the outside as well as the insides of the computer. What does to your walls in your house, it does to the computer as well.

I used to smoke back in the 90s and had a one of those beige colored computers. After about a year, it was stained yellow on the monitor casing and CPU.

i had an iMac G3 that was graphite, it had lots and lots of holes in it so that heat could escape... you should have seen it after 6 years of chain smoking in front of that thing... i actually took it apart once to clean it... was nasty! i no longer smoke in my apartment - eventhough i've been smoking for about 12 years or so, i've started to find it is really gross when the smoke lingers in the air and gets on the walls... besides, it's nice to get up and away from the computer for a smoke break on the balcony every hour or so...

isn't that a screen bleed? or a light leak? i have something like that but i though it was a light leak... is that a picture of your screen turned off, or all black? if the screen is all black and turned on it looks like i'll be buying some suction cups and some compressed air this week!

Hey

You don't have to go to the store because I have found this link on Youtube http://youtube.com/watch?v=wDcmG73xPzs

It's very usefull and totally free and you don't have to wait for your imac to be done at the store.

Apple offers onsite service?

yes, if you:

1) have an desktop mac == iMac or Mac Pro... (i don't think if Mac Mini is considered eligible because it's quite portable).
2) have purchased Apple Care (first year warranty does not cover an onsite technician).
3) live within 80km (50 miles) of authorized repair center / apple store.
