My iMac sounds like an old diesel car engine

Had the same problem with my 20" iSight G5. Made this buzzing noise the first time I started it up out of the box. I'm curious how widespread this problem is considering that several people have mentioned that their iMacs are whisper quiet. Perhaps Apple corrected this problem in their later batches. Is there any way to determine the manufacture date of an iMac? I bought mine just last week, but it still shipped with Mac OS X 10.4.2, which is pretty dated.

From reading around and asking questions, it seems most of the 20" versions that have serials endin TAR have the problem. iMac's which do not end in TAR do not have the problem.

Perhaps the ones that end in TAR are from an earlier batch. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to request an iMac with a specific serial number range.. I only hope I that the buzzing 20" iSights are the exception rather than the rule as I'm getting a replacement from Amazon.

Which makes me wonder why they haven't fixed it in the revision C version. From what I've read, the revision C fans are much less noisy than the revision A and B ones, which is good, but the buzzing noise persists.
