While I am still on the fence about if/when I'll buy an iPhone, I just received the following email from my IT department. Looks like they are apprehensive about the unknown Exchange integration:
In case any of you are thinking about purchasing the new iPhone, please consider this before doing so. There has been much conflicting information on whether or not the iPhone will synchronize with Exchange. If we cannot have direct synchronization to Exchange, we WILL NOT SUPPORT access to our Exchange based e-mail. We do know through Apples statement that it definitely will support access to Exchange through POP3 or IMAP, but we WILL NOT SUPPORT those access methods. Those are extremely troublesome to manage, and they are not secure (sends username/passwords via clear text over the internet.)
So if you want your smartphone to work with our email system, I would not purchase an iPhone until the mystery issue of Exchange synchronization is truly confirmed and proven. Neither Apple nor Microsoft have made a concretely specific statement yet. Hopefully we will get a clearer answer after the device is released and after Apple and Microsoft make absolute statements about the integration. This is a huge issue for many businesses, so I dont think the clarification and confirmation of support (or lack thereof) will take long. Once we learn more, we will let you know.
