My Mac Pro is a piece of....

It looks up all the time. I get a beachball and nothing works. It takes 10-15 seconds for everything to become free.

DVD player won't quit. Sometimes it wont eject my DVDs.

I am thinking about reinstalling OSX but I don't understand why it's acting like this. It is way too sluggish.

To clarify, this happens doing normal tasks, all of which are done with a UB.
Safari or Camino, transmission, adium, etc.

I have 2.66GHz, 2GB, 160GB + 200GB HD.

I can't install windows via bootcamp to boot. I get a "Disk error" and can't go any further in the install.

Take it to Apple.

Something is obviously wrong with the machine, there's nothing that could slow your machine down software-wise if you JUST got the machine.

Back up your data NOW. Disk Error message + constant slow downs means a failing hard drive. Call Apple.

Going to Apple is such a pain in the a$$. The genius bar is more like a friggin head ache than anything else.

I would just try callinig ApplaceCare? Maybe they could help? If the first rep's on the line can't diagnose the problem, they will actually transfer you to a "real specialist" that know the who and whats of all your questions. Try the apple.com discussion boards?

Are you installing Windows on a different drive to OS X? If so, it sounds like you have not set the options correctly when creating the partition. In Disk Utility when you create your partition for Windows you need to click the options button and set it to MBR or you will get the disk error message.

Hell yea. I had to take my mac pro in about the loud ass SuperDrive, those idiots don't know any more than me, if anything near what i know. They figure they work at the store, they're at the Apple Genius bar... they know it all. I've been working on macs since grade school. Internal stuff since high school. Don't assume I'm some non computer user, FIX MY $#!+!!!!!!!! But i guess they can't even do that. I'm sure all of them aren't that way, but i will say we have way too many arrogant Mac fan boys.

Something's definitely very wrong. Reinstall OS X anyway, AppleCare will probably end up suggesting this though may have other ideas for you first... things like repairing permissions and checking the HDDs wouldn't go a miss.

If all's still not right then it's hardware. Urgh.

only two suggestions from me..

1) Try using iChat for a while. I keep having issues with Adium where my whole system will start to lock up. removing it made all the problems go away.

2) Have you checked the SMART status of your drives? It sounds like you could have a bad hard drive.

You have a hardware test CD with your OS disks, run the long test and see what results you get.

Hopefully, you know that you must have a retail Windows XP CD INCLUDING
SP2 or it will not install.

Check your system profiler to make sure it's showing 2 GB RAM.
You might have to re-seat your DIMMS.

If all of these checks still do not solve your problem, then try re-installing OSX.
It's also a good time to re-partition your drives and custom install without
all the extra printer drivers, demos and language translators.

The geniuses at the store near me... well if you call it near.. it's like an hour and thirty minutes away but anyway, they're actually pretty good from what I've seen out of them.

First of all I will be the first to say that the genius bar is in name only. They are more or less there to handle I-D10T's that just got a new ipod and don't know how to use it. I have always been in favor of just giving appplecare a call and thats where you find the real geniuses. They have always walked me through any problem Ihave had and saved me the trouble of wihter sening in my hardware or taking it somewhere o get it fixed. In the end keep this in mind - THEY ARE STILL RETAIL EMPLOYEES. They maybe a half step above on the evolutionary scale than the morons at a compusa, circuitcity, bestbuy, and a full 2 steps above the dumbf*#!s at frys.

I have to say, Every Genius experience i have had at the San Francisco apple store has been very good. The Geniuses are not simply retail bozos there to help people with their ipods. they've always been pleasant, and very helpful to me, and I've seen them do good work with other machines as well.

that being said... it is a flagship store. I wouldnt be surprised if some of the stores they have in Malls had poor support at the Genius bar.

But really, you need to take it in. Something is causing serious conflict.

Of course the Genius Bar is a pain... and it takes a while. But take a half-day off, go VERY early (as soon as they open) and it's not terrible.

There is obviously something awry with your machine, and it's certainly either fixable or replaceable. No reason to keep working with a faulty unit. The few hours you might spend at the Apple store will be well worth it.

Think of it as cutting into your American Idol time - probably better for your mental health in the long run.

The geniuses at the regent street store, london are really good at fixing stuff, but the other day (collecting repaired macbook) two of them were telling me off for having acqlite (P2P) and transmission (bit torrent) on my dock, saying they are illegal. I know perfectly well that having them is fine, and they would not even consider my arguements, I think because of my age (Im only 15). In the end one of them told me that I should not try to tell them that file-sharing music is legal (which I wasn't) because the other one was a former officer of the law!
