Sorry to hear that your MBP died...

Also, I wanted to just say... the owner of a piece of hardware is probably at least 10x more likely to come and post about their problems than someone who has no issues at all. I own a pair of Klipsch ProMedia 5.1's and used to be an avid reader/poster over at those forums. I can't tell you how many people always posted about their speakers just dying on the spot. I've owned this set for at least 4 yrs now, along w/ half a dozen friends who all have the same set, and none of us have had issues. Even with what seemed like an alarming rate of failure sets on the forums, really only translated to less than 1% of all the items sent out.

Yeah, people are having issues w/ their MBPs, and they're being vocal about it, just as they should be. But at the same time, for every person that has a problem, I wouldn't doubt that there's 20 people that don't. I haven't received mine yet, but I have no doubt that it's a great piece of hardware and I can't wait to use it.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. It's good that people post their problems, because it makes consumers aware of what they have to possibly expect, but it also can mislead people as most people that don't have any issues, are too busy enjoying their hardware to take the time to hunt down a forum to post on.

Thats all good guys, I purely started this thread to chronical the process of my MBP dieing, getting fixed and me being a happy chap again. Really just to see how long it would take. The way things are going, this could be a seriously long thread...

Apple store quoted me 8-10 days last night.... Got a phone call this afternoon telling me that the parts needed to make the repairs will not be available until ... END OF MAY!!!!! (worst case scenario) Oh how I laughed!!!! So now I am back to square one. Waiting for my supplier to get back to me with a replacement... Yawn.

Mr Jobs... Or whatever your name is.... I know things do go wrong etc etc blah blah... But why release a professional tool, such as the MBP, that you can't support within the first three months of it's life!?

Do you guys in the USA have the same trouble getting spares...?

Well in NY something was wrong with my Memory slot so they offer a replacement. But they did ask if i brought the MacbookPro at the store or online. So I left with a sealed new Macbook Pro with a new receipt. I think if you brought it from the Store in London they would of gave you a replacement.

I think they dont have many spare parts since there is a demand to make full units now.

I don't think we hear enough from the people that don't have problems.

That reminded me of something i overheard when customer service guys were getting trained during my time doing IT for SkyTV...

"customers always talk about what they're unhappy with, bad service, and the like. try your hardest, don't slip up if you can help it, and be nice - even if something's wrong, but you do your best to help, the customer won't go round badmouthing us".

and it's true - people just don't talk about their good experiences enough, and that goes for here as much as the real world.

people in this thread are saying that apple should tighten up their quality control, but really, is it not already pretty tight? i mean, how many people on macrumors have bought a macbook? how many have complained? how many people around the world have bought a macbook? how many of them have complained?

i'm sure the proportion of people with problems, judging by these threads, and by news reports elsewhere, is pretty bloody low.

i think apple do a great job with quality control, and when that fails, their customer service is second to none.

why don't we all discuss these problems constructively and stop throwing sticks and stones at Apple, for problems that i bet are pretty isolated.

Out of curiosity, what data? Is there a listing of Apple's defect rate? I don't recall seeing this anywhere so I'd be interested to see how the assumption that Apple's defect rate is "low" when, in fact, it could actually be "high."
Worth repeating, since no one has answered yet.

Everyone assumes that Apple's defect rate is better than the industry norm but I've seen no data to support or refute that position.

In essence I don't see why Apple = quality when we have nothing to back that up. I think most people are making that leap on the basis of higher price = quality.

Well, considering the best motherboard manufacturers in the world have a failure rate of 30%, having a good number of issues with something more complex like a laptop isn't that surprising. These companies could lower that rate, but it's cheaper to replace faulty product than it is to increase the quality of each item. Unfortunately (or possibly fortunately), companies are in business to make money.

Not sure about the validity of this, but it looks pretty believable.

That's surprising.

My iMac died not long after I got it, and they just gave me a new one right away. I think they should have done the same for you.

Good Luck

I went through 3 MacBooks and finally said enough is enough. I went back to a desktop for the time being while I wait for Apple to sort out the quality issues.

Good Luck!

Hey, that's good enough for me! Excellent find, thank you!

It looks like Apple does quite well, but when you take in the total amounts, they're not signifigantly any better than the largest PC manufacturer, Dell. While I don't want to entirely discount Apple's quality, I think it says more about the quality of work that Dell does; to put out that many more machines and be within 1% of Apple -- who seems to brand solely on quality at times -- speaks well of them.
