I have met over 50 people, with MBAs. Of all of the topics I have ever discussed, never has there been a broken hinge addressed.

I think that this may stem from abuse or mistreatment or mishandling of the MBA's lid. Of all of the MBAs I have used, I have never noticed any issue with a hinge. I read about people pushing the lid all the way back, and I think that could be key here!

I think the hinge issue isn't as big of a deal as people make out. At least, I cannot see it happening during NORMAL use. For me, it has to be people weakening the MBA's hinge somehow seeming normal to them. I have seen two women carry around their MBA's by holding the lid only. I think treatment like that could lead to a hinge breaking down the road even when seems not likely abuse.

I could be way off base though!

I bought mine the day it came out...have never had a problem with it, take it e ever where I go...I'm a high school teacher, I use it every day to do my lessons on keynote...my hinges on nice and tight...I agree with the above post, broken hinges are caused by miss use...I've been very careful with it from day one, have a spek case to avoid scratches, have a sleeve to carry it around, it looks absolutely brand new

My wife has had her MBA rev A for a year now and hers is fine.

She uses it heavily (she takes it with her everywhere for work -- to and from the office every day, to court, to depositions, etc.) She opens and closes it frequently and, IMHO, treats her MBA carelessly, almost abusively in fact. It's pretty banged up but the hinge is fine.

I don't think every MBA has the potentially for this problem because my wife's MBA would have broken by now if it did. She picks it up by the screen sometimes for pete's sake.

ironically my move into the macbook air was prompted when the hinges on my last ultralight failed and i could not find replacement parts.

for ultralights, these hinge components are **incredibly** small and require only a minor defect for an early fail.

just my opinion here, but if the manufacturer subcontracted to produce the hinges isnt on his toes it's easy for some defects to get through. i suspect this was likely the case.

the really $h1tty part is that Apple doesnt allow for a simple hinge replacement, but requires you to change the entire lid.

i wonder. i would think $800 would be the cost for the entire lcd/top lid. i would want my old one back to dissect and sell the lcd on fleabay.

Aaron's Air Replacement thoughts

Hi everyone,

Just got my new air from Apple!

Good news, it now sits perfectly on my desk and doesn't wobble!!

Also the lines are fainter! They are there but I have to really look hard for them! I think this is good news, from a normal viewing distance I cannot see them. My screen model is still 00009C9A, does anyone else have a good one of these?

My only grip is that the trackpad button, while responsive now, makes a bit of a click. I have to say the whole keyboard is more responsive but not as solid as the old one, though I found this to be annoying. I realise it is hard to have a firm button and keyboard and not have it more resistance but can others please offer their opinions on this?

Best,

Aaron ;)

my powerbook used to have a button that clicked loudly when it was new, but after awhile it stopped. Maybe it will go away with use like mine did.

Sigh

Yeah maybe, I can still see the lines though. Maybe I should just get a a MacBook.

I am so disappointed in Apple.

Same thing happened with me (along with a host of other Air problems over the past year and a half), but the odds of getting one with lines are just too high to keep swapping them out. I went the the MBP.

The guy said I could return until happy.

I really want this machine but I will not accept less than perfect!!

Why is Apples quality control so crap sometimes!!!! You cannot premium prices for non premium products. I just wish they would admit there are problems and at least have some perfect units that they send to fussy customers that want perfection.

I am going to try 2 more times and if I don't get a good one I will cancel, complain and wait for rev C.

Are you saying that it gets darker in the dark, and brighter in the light?

Because that is what it is supposed to do.

If you think about it, you don't need as much light in a dark environment to achieve the same amount of "brightness" as you do in a light environment. The thing you have to realize is the light sensors are near the iSight camera, and if you are in a backlight environment and cast a shadow across it, things dim (I was doing this to myself earlier today when moving my arm around and casting a shadow over the light sensors).

Hey

I keep screen brightness as 70% all the time which is fine for me (it is annoying when it keeps adjusting all the times anyway).

The backlit keyboard usually comes on in the dark so I can see it and goes off when the lights are on but sometimes it works the other way around and turns on in the light and off in the dark! Is there a fix for it?

Cheers

Aaron

You can choose to turn off all the automatic functions in System Preferences. In Keyboard preferences you can turn off the ambient light sensor and in Display preferences you can turn it off for the display.
