Remember- that when it’s time to retire an iMac, you’ve got to trash a perfectly good monitor too (which was always apple’s plan).
If you get a Studio, you won’t be trashing monitors in the future.
Wait, do people actually toss out their old Macs instead of reselling them or gifting them to family members? I've seen lots of people make reference to "throwing out" the monitor with the iMac, but when you're reselling it or keeping it around as a secondary machine it's not really an issue (though in the case of the 5K iMac it's certainly pricey to get an external monitor that's as nice).

Before you buy a display, get the Luna Display dongle and connect your iMac to another Mac via USB-C and try it out.
Just FYI Luna Display only supports 5K resolutions at a maximum of 45 Hz, which might not be ideal for video and motion graphics work.

Thanks for the heads up. I wonder if it can downscale to 4k with a better refresh…

It says it supports 4K at 60 Hz, though I'm not sure whether that would look blurry or not on a native 5K display. There's a MacRumors thread here with people sharing their experiences you might find helpful :)
