3.3 pounds is a pretty substantial difference
I too carry around a 15" mbp, and I can tell you my backpack becomes much heavier when I put it in there. It's already full of heavy books when I put it in, and with that much weight, removing (or adding) 3 pounds can make quite a difference. If you need the power the mbp offers, then obviousy an air isn't an option. But if portability is more important, the weight difference is invaluable.
When I'm out and about, all I need my laptop for is taking notes and accessing the Internet. So having an air would be beneficial for me. If only I could justify having 2 laptops
