Sometimes a photo taken on the phone and is transferred via 'my photo stream' to my mac air instantaneously, and other times it can take more than an hour to transfer

Anything I can do to make sure photos are transferred soon after they are taken?

What photo stream?

"My photo stream" is part of the Photo app which, when you take a photo on your phone, it is automatically sent to the "my photo stream" in the Photos app on your laptop.

If you go into the Photo app in settings on your phone, you'll see a toggle for activating "My Photo Stream".
