I dont quite get it. What is with that after each and every post?

I can see who wrote a post by looking at the left side of my firefox window. I can see if you really like your name or something but is it really needed or is this just the new trendy thing to do.

I think a lot of people were afraid if they got rid of the darker colored smilies the lighter ones night be next.
