Good!!! Thats all I would need it for.. My native resolution is 1920x1200 - Its the 24 inch Apple LED Cinema display. I can just use "Grab" in utilities for screen capture, right?

I could be wrong, but I doubt anything using QE/CI would work. And that would be a LOT of things.

Quartz Extreme and Core Image. Basically, graphics acceleration. Without proper drivers I am guessing the card is running in a very basic mode.

What he means is that you get no acceleration or 3D capabilities. The driver is not present in 10.6.8 for this card, thus it is just a generic raster device with no resolution switching capability.

You would get the same thing if you used a 5x70 card booting into 10.5.8 right down to the lack of screen capture (can't screen capture if there is no frame buffer control/support, so no, Grab wouldn't do it).

Given that the card is finnicky as it is in 10.7.5, I wouldn't risk running it in 10.6.8 other than to run the installer for Lion/Mountain Lion and update from there.

I really wish it would run on a 1,1 Mac Pro, but it seems to crash in 32-bit mode even with the proper drivers in 10.7.5 (from the driver CD), so looks like us old timers are SOL here.

FWIW I wouldn't worry about PCIe 2.0 making the card too much slower - there isn't a card out yet that can saturate PCIe 2.0, though the extra per-link bandwidth in 3.0 helps throughput slightly (marginally).

At least this card costs less than the previous card available...which is odd. Very odd. Somebody care to tell me if the sky is falling? I'm afraid to look outside. :p

Can the 7950 drive 3 monitors, or would it need a second card to do that?

My understanding is it can drive a monitor through every port on it. 2 mini dispay , 1 hdmi and one DVI. However I have no way to test.

Have you had any graphics glitches with the card under OS X? I'm getting occasional screen flashes when playing HD videos. Don't know if it's a bad card or what.

I dont think Ive seen anything like that. I may have seen it but I was looking away when it happened so I dont know if my mind was just playing tricks on me.

Yeah I've been getting some very quick screen flashes under ML, but not under Windows. I also couldn't connect my display using the Mini-DP to DP adapter included with the card. I don't know if I might just have a bad card or what. The AHT and various video card tests I've run say the card is fine so dunno what to do.

Make sure you push hard on both ends.

MDP especially is prone to not getting connection if not completely seated. DP has a lock, but MDP does not.

Overheating?

I just installed the card, and it all seemed well. But, now appears to be overheating. When I play iTunes, after about 15 minutes, the screen goes black. Sometimes the audio continues and sometimes the computer just freezes up.

When I open the side door of the Mac Pro, the card is very hot -- too hot to the touch.

Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks

run the computer with the case off, double check that the PCI-Expansion fan is spinning, and the video card fan itself is spinning.

Also, if you just installed the card, I'd to a PRAM reset and especially a SMC reset.

Thanks, and I also installed the SMC fan control for the PCI fan.

Has anyone out there played a video in iTunes and see how hot their card gets?

I turned the fans way up and it's ok. Still, there's no way this card should have gotten that hot just playing an iTunes video.

did you confirm that the fan on the video card is spinning?
you shouldn't have to turn any fans up, sounds like you have a defective card.

I just installed a 7950 on my 4,1 driving two 30-inch Apple Cinema Displays. It solved my overheating issue with the previous 5870. It was entirely plug and play. I literally took it out of the box, popped it in and started it up. New driver took over. I then booted up into Windows 7. After a bit of thinking, Windows 7 installed a driver from somewhere and it works great. It actually doubled my possible frame rates in COD BOII and runs much cooler.

Good upgrade for me.
