I think it is a bit presumptuous to assume that all iMacs are now free and clear of defective panels based on your receipt of a screen defect free unit. I too have received a defect free unit however this does not indicate that faulty units are not still in production/being sold.

Firstly, "presumptuous assumptions" are the stock-in-trade of MacRumors forums! :)

Secondly, I cannot infer anything from these threads, beyond the observation that some folks have received unacceptable displays and some folks have received acceptable displays. We can argue relative percentages, but the only people who know for sure (Apple's bean counters) ain't talkin'! (Well, actually, we can't argue relative percentages, because I have no intention of arguing. :))

Personally, I will submit my order when:

1. a large quantity of refurbs start showing up,
2. the "expected ship time" on the Apple site starts dropping, and
3. the number of flawed machines on the problem-counting sites (e.g. www.imac.squeaked and www.listenupsteve.com) starts tapering off.

This will signal to me that Apple's fixed the flicker, which is more important (for my purposes) than the yellow peril.

I think there is a difference between assumption and speculation, the later is at the heart of this site.

Do you not agree that apple should deliver a computer that is free of both screen flicker and yellow tinge? Why settle?

I was thinking if the yellow tinge problem had anything to do with the lcd's/pixels itself, the tinge would be more scattered over the whole screen. Instead, it is most of the time only at the bottom of the screen and 'grouped' together (looks like 1, 2 or maybe 3 groups of yellow tinge). Does that tell anything?

Why the sarcasm?

YOU asked a question, I answered it truthfully that LG was the only company making that type of panel, and I get rolled eyes as a response?

A tad rude don't you think?

The sarcastic emoticon was only in response to you not "getting" my sarcastic undertone in the question. I am aware that LG is the only producer of the panel. Sorry if it appeared rude.

Of course there is a difference! That was my (slightly tongue-in-cheek) point. :)

I love hearing gossip about my favorite computer company--not so much the "presumptuous assumptions" about truth that seem to be bubbling through a few of these threads. (I have yet to see any posts that struck me as authoritative concerning the cause of the tinge, the cause of the flicker, the numbers affected, etc. Have you read something that I have missed?)

If someone has some non-rumor info (i.e. non-extrapolation-from-incomplete-data info), please step up to the plate. In lieu of an authoritative source, I think we would all be best served by staying a bit humble and keeping an open mind.

("Expecting humility and open-mindedness in an anonymous internet forum? Are you crazy? Are you my mother?")

Yes and no.

Well, more precisely, I think that Apple must eliminate the flicker, since such a defect would never be acceptable.

It is not technically possible to produce a perfect display. Apple should work to minimize imperfections to the point that the vast majority of users are happy. The two iMac specimens that I have seen in person were perfectly acceptable to me.

Why settle?

Hey, this might make a good marketing slogan. :)

One more theory

LED/LCD backlight is a relatively new technology, and every manufacturer has jumped into this without resolving some issues ;

1) LED backlighting uses BLUE LED's with yellow phosphor to give a white light;
But as it happens, with high temperature, the White LEDs suffer from "blue shifts" at higher temperatures.
So the yellowness at bottom, may actually be more of an issue of "blueness" at the top / hot areas. It looks yellow due to screen color calibration and when compared to the "blue area"...

2) Backlight bleeding... this issue is totally unresolved by any LCD panel manufacturer's, and the only test method would be a 100% check and testing each product [not a sample from a batch] with varying degree of usage; As i see it, some backlight bleeds appear over time...

Just another theory.....

Very nice theory. It's an interesting insight thinking about how the screens are backlit.

I don't know if it's just because I'm getting used to it, but I've had my iMac for 10 days now, and when I look at the screen I think, it's getting better? Got to be psychological!

~Theory Time!!!!!~

So the yellow tinge is in the bottom right of the screen... right?

so.. if someone takes out the screen and turn it 180 degrees horisontally so the yellow tinge infected area is on the upper left.

if yellowing appears on the non affected (new) bottom right hand side...
i think we found our culprit... some hardware behind it? :(

or if the yellowing worsens on the infected area, then its the glass.

your welcome to my brilliance.
aren't i amazing!

:)

My theory is these are cheap monitors it's as simple as that. A good monitor with those specs would cost alot more than what Apple's charging and Apples is not the kind of company that gives things away. It's not surprising at all that so many have discoloration issues, over time they'll all develop a yellow tinge.

No they won't get worse over time. My 23" Cinema Display had a slight color cast and never got worse over several years. My 24" LED Cinema Display is the same.
