My third whining MacBook, second with screen flickering

I really must hand it to Apple for providing me with such high quality MacBooks. I'm on my third now. It still whines, and it still has a flickering screen. Unfortunately, I'm not too sure if I can return it. It was ordered November 8th, so it's not like I'm within my two week period. Thank you Apple.

Like I've said so many times before, I really, really, doubt that there's such a thing as a non-whining MacBook. Either you don't know what it sounds like, or your hearing ain't that good (or maybe you just deny it?). I still haven't heard a MacBook without it anyway.

What can I say? I'm really disappointed. This is the price I have to pay for wanting OS X? I'm going to contact Apple tomorrow and see what can be done about this. I hope I can somehow get my money back.

My room is dead silent and I can't even hear the fan on my MB. I'll try running more programs and see if it starts to whine.

You can't even hear the fan? It's not that silent. I mean, it's really easy to hear the fan. Maybe the whine is trickier though.

If I actually pay attention to the fan noise, I can barely hear it. It's running at 2500rpm right now. I have to place my ear on the MB to actually hear the fans spinning.

So the "whine" is suppose to be constant? Is your MB a core duo or core 2 duo?

Oh just deal with it, its not a big deal. Its just the sound it makes.

The whine is there when there's no CPU activity. For example, launch photo booth and it goes away. I have a Core 2 Duo MacBook.

Are you in a loud environment or something? The fan noise isn't loud, but it's still very easy to hear. This puzzles me. :)

Hey man, I feel your pain! I had a couple Macbook Pros that did the same thing and among other things. But don't give up on Apple. I know you are pissed and that is perfectly understandable, but don't let a few bugs cause you to hate apple. They will get you a machine that works. Dont worry.

I bought my MB at the very end of December and it doesn't have any issues. I can hear the fans, but no flicker and no whine. And, I hear high frequencies quite well (most TVs and other things that many others don't hear).

I don't know. I really want OS X, but I can't keep doing this. It's been more than two months now.

Yes. I must say though, the whine is still there when the magsafe isn't plugged in, but it's more quiet.

Can someone describe this whine?/when it happens and what you are doing? After reading a couple threads about this I went and listened. Mine is very quite until it is under a heavy load then it seems to be loud...almost louder than it should be with a whine type of sound.

Is it only considered whining when under little or no load and you can still hear it?

I hear a veryvery faint noise coming (sort of like a buzzy screech? a whine, I guess?) from the left side of the computer but I only hear it when I place my ear against the keyboard.

I don't use the Macbook with my head pressed against it, so there is no problem, as far as I'm concerned. I can't hear it if I'm sitting upright.

With the exception of the fan when I am watching a long movie, my Macbook C2D (late 2006) is SILENT.

And before you even say it, I am VERY aware of high pitched buzzing sounds. My television when left on too long has this very faint, and very annoying high pitched whine that I cannot STAND. I have tested it in silent rooms, starting every resource hungry program I can think of and listening to all parts of the computer.

While I am usually very conscious of a wide range of sounds, my macbook (with the exception of the occaisional fan noise) is SILENT.

Just thought I would share. :p

I actually might have just heard the whine! But I guess for most people that can't hear the whine, that's why there are those few who complain about the whine. In that case, they should just deal with it.

Right, and I can usually hear high pitched sounds, to the point I can't use some of my electronics. I am cursed with canine quality hearing.

I am 100% completely positive my macbook has no whine.

The fan and the whine sound quite different, but you have to know what you're listening for.

Right now, I'm running Compressor and FCP. All fans are on and the laptop is running at 178ºF. It is a constant sound.

The whine isn't as constant The sound is intermittent. IE there will be a small break in sound every few seconds.

My MBP doesn't whine very often. My boss's whines constantly. Thing is, he can't even hear the whining. To me, the frequency is deafening.

Don't confuse the fans with whining.
