I think if you were some sort of creative artist you'd understand. Some artists don't want their stuff being distributed willy-nilly around the Internet. It doesn't matter if you agree with it or not -- it's NOT FOR YOU TO DECIDE, they made it, not you. I love great wallpaper collections too, but that doesn't make it right to redistribute others' work without permission. To think that you DO have that right shows no respect for the artist whatsoever. And to call people who are simply concerned for the rights/will of the artist "conservative/republican wierdo" is pretty laughable, since freely redistributing without permission is, strictly speaking, against the law -- since when in the last few years have republicans obeyed the law?
These artists took the time to make these wallpapers, and they made them free. In exchange, the least courtesy one could do is ask their permission -- and then you're within the law anyway. One easy way to make a gallery of your favorite wallpapers would be to have the thumbnails link back to the original place you downloaded them from -- then you're not redistributing, just linking.
Most likely, no one's going to come after you for posting a few copyrighted pictures on a personal web site, and if they do they'll just ask you to take it down. So the issue is really as much about respect for the artists as the law. Just wanted to point that out.
