The point is that, at least in my experience on AT&T, you have to pay more for a service that doesn't give you any extra data. Like, if I'm paying for 3GB of data per month, WHY would I pay $10 more just to be able to use that same 3GB in a slightly different way? It's an unfair company practice to squeeze more money out of us.

For the third time, I don't disagree with your statement. I just giving the facts as to what AT&T can contractually do to your plan and has done recently. I DO think we should able to use our data however we please, but that is not the case. I am here to provide information and experiences, not my opinion.

----------

Except I've read many different things from that statement in this forum, not to mention I know many people who tether on Sprint without a tethering package for years now with nothing happening to them.

Do I personally know people that use Sprint that have had the tethering plan tacked onto their bill as a result of tethering without the plan? No.

Do I know people that have been forcibly removed from their unlimited plan because they used minor data quantities by tethering without a tethering plan on AT&T and Verizon? Yes.

Has Sprint been an iPhone carrier as long as AT&T and Verizon? No. Does Sprint have as good of a network as the big two carriers? No. Is there a solid chance Sprint will catch onto people breaching their contract by tethering without a tethering plan? One who is smart would assume so.

If you're on Sprint, tether away. But whenever you are doing something that breaches contract, it's only a matter of time before the business takes notice. AT&T let it slide for years, but abruptly took action.

So I have read through all the post on here, and things seem to be taken out of context. If you use MyWi or what ever backdoor tethering service you choose there could be some consequences. However if you are like me and just use the service from time to time, say like traveling and wanna use a tablet in a car or where there is no Wifi, and you have no major spike in your data usage. Your service provider isn't going to suspect anything. Now if you use your service of choice and decide to shut off our home internet and start using your phone for all you home surfing needs, and have a huge spike in data use, yeah they are going to look into that and probably kick you off the unlimited plan. I have only every gone over 3Gb of data twice in the 4-5 years i have been with at&t, usually around 1.5-2Gb a month, and for the little bit I will actually use MyWi its not going to spike out my data use so I am really not worried about it, it is just more or less a nice to have in case it is needed.

ATT sent me a letter for using MyWy5 on 4S

I used Mywy one weekend at the deer camp in November for the wife to do some Christmas shopping. Used it just the one day, and for less than an hour total use. Got a letter from ATT First of January saying I was tethering and was not paying for tethering and if I didn't contact them they would automatically upgrade me to a tethering plan. I am currently on a grandfathered unlimited plan. So after talking to them and was told that if I did it again, then they would change my plan, I uninstalled Mywi, Would rather keep the unlimited plan.

Sounds like really bad luck there.

Does anybody understand the way AT&T finds out other than extreme spikes in data usage? Browser agent? Use of Flash player? How do they know?

Because although they suck, AT&T isn't run by a bunch of idiots. They can tell, we just don't know how.

It's not spikes I'm excessive data, they can tell. Though using data in massive quantities will give it away

Why the hell is there an upgrade fee? Does it come with new features or is he charging us just for the privilege of running it on ios6? I'd rather just put the money in a different app

I remember reading that companies detect your APN settings when you tether. A good tether app can properly hide your settings from your carrier. On the android phones, rooted apps can do this pretty good.

I believe one iOS tether app was actually using a carriers OWN APN tether settings (instead of their own method)! They were easily caught and pissed off alot of people. (It was a paid app).

Maybe we ought to create a poll between MyWi and TetherMe? Caught? (Yes or No)

Matt

Who cares? Most carriers permit tethering, and if you do it "illegally", they'll tack on a tethering plan and/or remove unlimited data plan if applicable.

Let's see... which carrier allows you to tether without insane fees in the US:

AT&T: nope
Verizon: nope
Sprint: nope

MyWi costs, what, $20? That's a one-time cost. The carriers charge at least that much, every month.

I paid for MyWi, MyWi 5, and TetherMe. I had AT&T's "Unlimited" plan for over 3 years and would use these tethering apps a lot. My overall data usage was very low. I'm guessing that's why they never threatened me.

Could they detect I was tethering? Probably. I never was told to stop.

I recently switched to the "Shared Data" plan. Now my whole family has iPhones, and we can all tether with the built-in tethering.

That's the way I see it too. I have the unlimited plan through ATT and I do not want to switch to a tethered plan if I don't NEED to. I don't use that much data and only spent $20 for it one time. If you're abusing it, that's when you're probably going to get a warning.

It's not a one time cost. They charged me $20 to use it initially and subsequently more money each time they release a new version for iOS.

What you were doing was breaching the contract. As I said above, I don't care what you do in regards to the legality of your contract. But I have read and witnessed people as personal as my brother use MyWi for a few Mb and have had their account flagged. He fought many times before they reinstated it, and since then obviously doesn't tether because if he did again they would forcibly switch him to a tiered tethering plan.

The carriers are cracking down on it, so now for the fourth time, I will tell you that MyWi may work, but your carrier will find you eventually. And then you run the risk of losing your unlimited plan for good.

That's the way I see it too. I have the unlimited plan through ATT and I do not want to switch to a tethered plan if I don't NEED to. I don't use that much data and only spent $20 for it one time. If you're abusing it, that's when you're probably going to get a warning.

Okay. Use MyWi, but you will eventually be caught. As soon as the new jailbreak drops and people use MyWi, the first posts to pop up are those such as "AT&T NOTIFIED ME 4 TETHERING ON MAH UNLIMITED PLAN WTF".

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

-------------------------

MyWi is a well developed app, but people do NOT understand that carriers often know who is tethering and who is not. This isn't a 1000% safe option, so as long as people are aware of the risks, then feel free to shell out $20 to risk your unlimited data plan.

2) are you ignorant? It's a known fact carriers are doing it. Search and scan, it's far from unheard of.

Like I said, I've been downloading 80 to 100 GIGS per month for the last 18 months at least!! Not a single word from Verizon. Not a single instance of throttling.

You're just assuming, and you know the danger in that.

Mywi tethering,

I forgot to mention, my monthly usage usually runs 1.5 to 2.5 gigs a month, even the month I used the Mywi tethering the one time the monthly usage was 2.3 gigs of data.

If you stay below 3 Gb on 4G or 5Gb on LTE, the chance of being investigated is lower. But there are still instances of users that use a few MB and have their plan switched.

I'm giving you fair warning.

Do you think the many topics and posts on these and many other forums are made up? No.

I never said MyWi tethering does not work or will 100% lead your carrier to changing your plan, I'm just making sure that people understand the risks of their decision. Primarily because many users on this forum shoot first and ask questions later when it's too late and their plan was forcibly changed.

You may use 100Gb in one month and have your plan changed. You may use it for a year and have it changed. Or maybe they will never notice, as the methods they use are unknown. But do realize that you are breaching contract and they reserve the right to terminate or modify your service at any time.

In the mean time, happy tethering.

Wow, I paid a lot of money for MyWi - and now they want more money for a simple upgrade, well they won't get it. It should be free upgrades for life. Trying to take advantage of people that rely on tethering, greedy mofos! Hey I know! Why not slap a 5 gig a month limit on it, and charge another $20 to unlock the program if you go over it!

If you have a shared data plan you can tether natively through settings for free.

Well said. I can't believe im saying this but I might just pirate version 6. Or depending on the upgrade price, just buy a competitor. I guess it really depends on if they add features or just charge for the sake of running on iOS6.

I barely ever tether as it is but its nice to be able to do simple things on the go where I have no internet.

So would you work free for life?
I don't think any programmers will update and keep rewriting their software for free.
But it's up to you, you don't have to update. Use another program. There's cheaper ones out there.

Walk the plank....

Just try a competitor right off the bat...TetherMe has a lot of good reviews.

I'm a developer and I don't charge money for somebody to be able to use software on a new update.

How many app store apps have you paid to use on iOS6?
How many Cydia apps have done this before?
Heck, the dev for BiteSMS had to do a significant rewrite for iOS6.

But maybe im getting ahead of myself here, perhaps he's got something big for the new version.

Thanks, ill look at it. I tether a handful of times a year and don't use much data at all when doing so. Just nice to have that option.

I hear what your saying but not every dev is like that. We don't see that on AppStore apps but many other cydia devs do the same.
He sold you a product that worked great for your old iPhone on the older iOS with no promise you will keep getting free upgrades that will work on your new idevice on every new major iOS release forever.
I will wait and see too. Hope he doesn't charge too much for the update.

Yeah I mean realize im not entitled to an update I just think it's kind of a ****** thing to do. MyWi is already one of, it not the most expensive Cydia app.

Was it like this for upgrading from 4-5? I don't recall paying anything extra.

Yep. It was like that before too since I paid him an upgrade fee for mywi 5.
I think tetherme is doing something similar with previous paid customers needing to pay a small fee.
Depending how much mywi asks I might switch to tetherme. It's usually way cheaper than mywi.

I take the risk in jailbreaking my phone, and I take the risk in tethering with MyWi. We get your point. We all get it!! You don't need to keep repeating it 1000 times. If I get caught, so be it. I will be forced to use their tethering plan and lose my unlimited. Why switch now and pay more for less when I can get away with it now--and maybe for a long time too. We'll see.

Because for one, MOST users that download MyWi do not understand the risks involved of losing your plan. Two, most would rather retain an unlimited data plan for their phone. Getting switched to a tiered plan just for tethering features which costs more than your unlimited data plan (which becomes useless since multiple devices chugging one data package evaporates quickly) is worst case scenario.

YMMV.
