I also just thought of something I remember from "back in the day" that maybe I need to flash the PROM. I think when it was updated to 10.5.8 that its on now, that may have updated settings in firmware and/or PROM...so both will be tried today. Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know!

Eprepguy were you able to find PROM files for download? I was looking for them to try on a G5 that has been driving me loopy (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/g5-firmware-version-assistance-needed.1951709/). They no longer seem to be available for download from Apple.

I downloaded the iso at home on my 2013 MacBookAir running 10.10.5 (Yosemite). I then transferred the iso from local downloads folder to usb3 thumb drive and took into work with me. I then transferred the iso to my main workstation, a 2012 3.33Ghz 6-Core Mac Pro running 10.10.5 (Yosemite).
I then used disc utility on my main workstation to burn image to dvd and it did so successfully.
I then took the DVD made by burning the iso downloaded from MagicBoy and inserted into the G5. It popped up on desktop just fine and I double clicked the install button and it asked me to restart from dvd to install OS X . I clicked OK and it restarted, flashing question mark for a brief second then and proceeded booted up off its regular hard drive again into 10.5.8 with the Jaguar DVD back on the desktop...mocking me ;)

"Alt"??? This is a Mac. Do you mean "Option"?
I tried doing this several times with "c" key held down and "option" key held down but no change in boot up.
"Option" key held down did bring up the option of only the internal hard drive "Macintosh HD" to boot from
so back to square one...

That is not true! Most NWR Macs can boot from USB, you just have to format the USB as APM and make sure the ISO is cloned to the USB correctly. Then boot the Mac open firmware (CMD+OPT+O+F)and type boot ud:,\\:tbxi and hit enter

Hack 5190: No I have not even tried that yet or looked for PROM files

MacCubed: That technique sounds promising, I did not know that. Thanks!

What I have done so far today:

OK, I took a 640GB HD and partitioned it (for PPC) into 2 partitions.
On one of them I installed regular Jaguar to 10.2.8 from original retail full version discs and update disc.
On the other I did a clone of the 10.2.7 G5 install disc from the iso image downloaded from MagicBoy

1. The 10.2.8 OS partition was set as startup disc but did not boot (G5 kept kicking back to its own 10.5.8 internal
2. 10.2.7 G5 install does not allow install from anything other than a DVD, and that we already know just gets kicked back again to the 10.5.8 internal

So next attempt (whilst awaiting a complete disc image of a boot drive from German friend) is to install 10.2.8 disc internally to G5, remove power from existing 10.5.8 internal and see if that works.

I really wish that 10.2.7 G5 install DVD had worked for me, I am not sure why it didn't

Hi iModFrenzy, it is my understanding that the pre-Intel macs were not capable of booting from USB.

Depends on the Mac, but G5s should be able to.

My iBook G3 can boot on USB fine. My PowerBook G4 can't without some additional commands.

Thanks, Swamprock!! That worked!! Hallelujah!!! Its alive!! I have successfully installed 10.2.8 onto a G5
This is so great I don't know what to say. The other disc images I got must have been for a slightly different machine. This one worked! Next steps should be easier! :)

Best

Thanks, MagicBoy! I am sure your disc image should have worked as well. I don't know why it didn't, probably something I did downloading or burning it. Your help on this was much appreciated :) For whatever reason, this download and disc worked (On my single processor 1.6GHz G5, btw...it doesn't want to work on the dual 2Ghz G5 yet, gets almost there and then locks up on boot up. But I am equally happy to have it all working on the 1.6Ghz G5!

I remembered that my June '04 DP 2.0 came with this disc, in a box meant for a 1.6ghz 1st gen G5. I also remembered this thread, so I dug it out last night, imaged it, and tossed it on the 'garden. In any event, I'm glad it worked for you.

Unfortunately the link to on this page to mega download doesn't appear to work any more

Would you by any chance have an updated link that will allow me to download the image? thank you
Seems to be working on my side, Mega shows that there is a file. It's a zipped dmg. But I'm checking on my phone so I can't download and test it.

Working here too. Took a while for the Mega page to load (the circle within the cloud symbol eventually fills-in in red), then it went to the download page.

working fine for me now, swear it wasn't this morning, then again perhaps I should be doing tech stuff at 2am!! :)

I know that someone on Macintosh Garden changed the description title of the disk on the site, but it appears that it didn't affect the link I posted above. Glad it's still up.

Hi iModFrenzy, it is my understanding that the pre-Intel macs were not capable of booting from USB. I know they were bootable from Firewire because I used to do that routinely.
So, what I am trying with an attached Firewire drive or what LightBulbFun suggests may work.
The subject got me to thinking about how certain discs are formatted now (Mac OS Extended..Journaled..etc.) vs how they were formatted back then (I think just HFS or HFS+) and that may be why it (G5) keeps kicking out the install disc...

Still Efforting...in and amongst regular weekend chores...:)

Edit: Sorry I didn't see that there was a second page on this thread and this issue was already answered. I'll leave this up in case it is helpful to anyone.

The USB limitation is a fairly common misconception. Apple did not specifically support USB booting for OS X (although they did for OS 9). Open Firmware however does support USB boot devices. Many later PPC macs will even display bootable USB drives when you hold down the Option key at start up. Even if they don't, you can still boot into Open Firmware and boot manually from the command line. There is plenty of documentation on that elsewhere.

I was able to install debian to an iBook G3 clamshell this way about a week ago after failing to boot from 3 separate CDs.

I just picked up a 1.6Ghz G5, and this was exactly what I needed to get up and running, along with the Classic environment so I can keep on enjoying 68000 based stuff under emulation (under emulation, under emulation) on native hardware!

Thanks so much!!!!!!!

The image that I originally posted has been replaced by a set of more-complete images from the whole 10.2.7 set. A good thing...
