Have an MBP at home so no mousemat there.
 
Don't have any of these problems and been using it for 6 months

Its probably the mighty mouse thats to blame, as it doesn't have the glidey surface, most mice have.

The old apple optical mice have a habit of scraping the prism shape piece against the plastic.. dunno why, just saying!
 
I use a SteelSeries Experience I-2 (Black). It's glass and looks nice with my other black/brushed aluminum accessories. I ended up fitting the sample mouse feet they give you onto my magic mouse because the metal feet were screeching against the glass. With the feet it glides very smoothly and works great.
 
My cheap €8 white leather "Hama for Mac" series mouse pad. Its surface is quite rough but I love it.
